Sarto (MacLean), Elizabeth Marie (Betty) –
It is with deep heartfelt sorrow we announce Betty passed peacefully on June 2, 2022, surrounded by the love of her family. Born in Port Hood, she was the daughter of the late Alex MacLean and Florence (Murphy) MacDonald. She will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by her devoted husband of 60 years Condo Sarto; daughters Anna Marie (Ken MacKay); Sandy; and grandson, Anthony Sarto Morrison. She is survived by her sisters, Sally, Port Hood; Dorothy (Mono Baggio) Truro; brother Jim MacLean, Port Hood; brother-in-law Nobile Sarto, Glace Bay; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by sister Catherine Bonn-Himmelman; stepfather, Allan MacDonald; stepbrother, John MacDonald; stepsister, Hazel MacDonald, and sister-in-law Bruna Gillis.
Betty attended Teacher’s College and taught for a year in the one room schoolhouse in Judique. She then began working for the Royal Bank of Canada; her career commenced in Port Hood, moving to Glace Bay, then to the Halifax branch on Morris and Barrington Streets. Betty continued working for a number of years part time at the Tacoma branch in Dartmouth. Betty was an active member in the community and particularly in politics as she played an incredibly supportive role to Condo who was a member of Dartmouth and Halifax Municipal Councils from 1979-2004. She genuinely enjoyed politics with a keen interest and care for all people. She was a regular member of the weekly Dartmouth Council meetings as an observer and joined Condo in many events and functions representing both the City of Dartmouth and Halifax Regional Municipality. Over the span of several years, she was also an active volunteer for the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Canadian Cancer Society and March of Dimes; she always extended a helping hand to any one in need.
Betty’s strong Catholic faith was always a great comfort to her. Through her life in Port Hood, she participated in St. Peter’s Parish singing in the choir and supporting parish activities. Betty was a founding committee member and current member of Saint John XXIII Parish, Cole Harbour. She served many years on the Parish Council; supported various committees and sang in the church choir.
Throughout her well lived life, Betty was a tremendously personable, kind-hearted, thoughtful, and caring individual who deeply loved her friends and family unconditionally. We lost a beautiful person in our family, and she will live forever in the hearts and cherished memories of her husband, children, Anthony -the light of her life and her faithful companion Finnegan.
We would like to extend gratitude and thanks to Dr. Adeniji (Domi), NS Continuing Care, Northwood Home Care and VON for their tremendous support and care over the past few years. As well, special thanks and appreciation to Oceanview Manor (Shoreside) staff for their kindness, compassion, and supportive care for the past number of months. Donations may be made to the NS Alzheimer’s society, a charity of your choice or please consider participating in an unknown act of kindness to remember her.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Dartmouth Funeral Home, Dartmouth. There will be no visitation and a mass will be planned at a later date.
