Obituary
After a long and healthy life spanning nine decades, Elaine passed peacefully at Summerland Seniors Village in Summerland, in the Okanagan Valley of BC, on June 20, 2022.
Elaine was the wife of the late Keith Campbell Moore (May 5, 1924 – August 1, 1989). Mother of Linda (John Fox), Steven (Arleen Armitage), Jane (Graham Russell-deceased), Trudy (Bob Campbell), Jackson-deceased, and special daughter Sue Kelly (Tom). Grandmother of Tracey Armitage (John), Drew Campbell (Tara), TJ Campbell (Kari), Brett Campbell (Lauren), and Ali Myers (Chris). Great Grandmother of Nora & Kacy, Kelton & Henley, Beckett & twins Hailey Jo & Scottie Rose, Chase & Eli (All Grandchildren of Trudy & Bob Campbell). Sister of the late Lulu Grace “Lou” Simpson and the late Albert “Abby” Frank Bowman.
Our mother was a strong person physically and emotionally – no doubt the result of being a child of the depression, the war years, and life on a small family farm with no modern conveniences, in Nipissing Village, Ontario.
Her determination was evident early on having sought and obtained a high school education in North Bay. An impressive accomplishment for the times, Mother instilled the importance of an education by encouraging us to attend college or university. Equally important was her faith and support of the Knox United Church during her years in Nipissing.
Elaine married Keith Moore in 1947, shortly after his return from serving in the Navy during WWII. They raised five children and ran both a successful general store and a tourist camp in Nipissing, which meant a busy, hectic yet fulfilling life. These were great years and happy times with Lake Nipissing serving as a backdrop for both recreation and business. Retirement years included a summer cottage on Wolfe Lake, winter trips to Florida and Hawaii, and annual pilgrimages to the “Brier”.
KC’s early passing triggered a move for Elaine and son Jack to the warmer climes of Summerland, to be closer to daughters and grandkids in the West. Lots of good wine and no black flies were added bonuses. Elaine built herself and Jack a fine new home which they inhabited for nearly three decades. As their need for assistance increased, daughter Jane managed their care, giving them extra years at home before transitioning to Summerland Seniors Village.
Thanks to the compassionate care at SSV and Jane’s tireless oversite, Jack (March 6, 2018) and Elaine (June 20, 2022) were happy and content throughout their remaining days. Literally singing to the end of her 93 years, Mother remained positive, no matter what obstacles life presented. A short quote from Sigmund Freud may help explain why: “In retrospect the years of struggle will seem the most beautiful”.
Mom. We trust that the tranquility of the hereafter will be a fitting reward for your life well-lived. If not, we are sure that you will get it straightened out in short order. Know that the life lessons you have taught will live on in your children and their children.
Now we must say goodbye.
