(Doris) Eileen Thomas (nee Davie)
July 11, 1928 – June 12, 2022
Eileen Thomas, our dear and cherished mother, grandmother and friend, passed away on June 12, one month before her 94th birthday. Scrupulously well-groomed and well-dressed, gracious with a tenacious personality, she maintained her dignity and poise always.
She was an impressive woman, principled, well-spoken, always positive with a penchant for being practical and realistic, claiming during her last few years that “she had reached her best before date.” Since April 2021 she had been living at the Brant Centre Long-Term Care Residence in Burlington.
Eileen was happiest when surrounded by her family, daughter Lesley Allison, son David Thomas and his wife Joanne Emerson, and grandson Tarek Nemr. She was loyal and protective of those she loved and as a result developed strong and lasting friendships.
Born in 1928 in Vancouver to Alan and Doris Davie, Eileen raised her two children while working at the North Shore News, where she met the love of her life, Don Thomas. Soon after, the family uprooted and relocated to southern Ontario to pursue a business opportunity in the publishing industry and start a new life together.
Constant stalwart companions, Eileen and Don remained devoted to each other until his untimely death in 1977. She spent most of her life in Mississauga but always stayed close to her west coast roots, namely her brother, the late Roy Davie, and nephews Brian and Bruce, his wife Milena, and their children Caitlin and Elliot. At any given time, Eileen could recite weather conditions in Vancouver and discuss social and political issues in Ontario and B.C.
She was a contradiction of sorts…the consummate consumer, she purchased beautiful homes and fixtures, enjoyed fine dining and gave generous gifts, while at the same time she would scour newspapers for sales and grocery store ads for special deals and discounts.
An avid reader of books and newspapers, she was also adept at completing crosswords in ink to keep her mind sharp and travelled extensively with family and friends to destinations overseas, in the Caribbean and across North America.
Eileen will be sorrowfully missed.
In keeping with her wishes, there will be no formal funeral service. No flowers or donations, only joyful and caring memories.
