Edward (Ned) Patrick Bruce
March 4, 1931 – June 10, 2022
Passed peacefully away after a courageous battle with cancer on Friday, June 10, Edward (Ned) Patrick Bruce, age 91 years. Predeceased by his parents Anne (nee Collins) and Patrick Bruce; beloved wife Mary (nee Murray), partner Marg Ferrie; brothers Jerry (wife Catherine) and Ned Collins; sisters Mary (husband Ray Precourt) and Catherine (husband Gerry O’Rielly).
Leaving to mourn devoted daughter Eileen Bruce and treasured granddaughter Emily Fagan whose lives have been blessed with having “Poppy” for so many years. Also leaving to mourn sister-in-law Theresa Collins, as well as many nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
Dad was born in Jerseyside, Placentia in a time that was much simpler than the fast-paced world we live in today. He married my mother, Mary, in 1956 and they later moved to St. John’s where they lived together until she passed away in 1974.
My father worked as a crane operator with Crosbie’s, Capital Crane and, in later years, at the Bull Arm site. He worked very hard. Sometimes the journey to the work site in the crane took as long as the job itself.
In 2004 “dad” became “poppy” when the light of his life, his granddaughter Emily, arrived. To say my father cherished every moment he had as a grandfather is an understatement. Everyone who met my father used the same word to describe him “sweet”. He was the epitome of what a true father and grandfather is. I am so blessed Emily and I had his love, strength and kind nature as an example by which to model our lives.
Dad’s later years involved games of bingo, attending church, and driving to Tim’s as he was blessed to still have his license until age 90. Dad will be missed by his many friends at Kenny’s Park Apartments where he resided for six years until moving this past October to Cannings Personal Care Home in CBS.
Thank you to the staff of Cannings, as well as the staff of 7 East at St. Clare’s and the Leonard A Miller Centre who looked after Dad in his final days.
Finally, special thanks to Jody O’Brien for all of her visits to dad over the years, especially during dad’s final evenings when she was there for both him and me.
Cremation has taken place. Waking at Cauls Funeral Home, LeMarchant Road on Tuesday, June 14 from 2:00-4:00p.m. and 7:00-9:00 p.m., funeral to take place at Mary Queen of Peace Church, Torbay Road on Wednesday, June 15 at 9:30 a.m., with interment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Flowers gratefully accepted, or a donation can be made in Dad’s name to the SPCA, St. John’s.
Rest in peace now, Dad. I know that when you are met at Heaven’s gate by mom she will hold your hand, smile and say “you did an amazing job”.
“Did you ever know that you’re my hero
And everything I would like to be?
I can fly higher than an eagle
For you are the wind beneath my wings.”
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Edward Patrick Bruce 2022..
