Obituary for Edward Cecil Coates
Edward Cecil Coates (Feb. 7, 1938 – May 11, 2022)
We wish to announce the passing of Edward (Ted), peacefully, at Southlake Hospital,
Newmarket, after a long battle with COPD. Edward is lovingly remembered by many friends
and family. Predeceased by his first wife, Rene, and his daughter, Tracy. Ted will be missed
greatly by his loving daughter Leslie, (Rick) and his grandsons, Michael and Christopher. Ted
had the good fortune of being married to Mary, up until 2018; he cherished being step father to
Gwen (Rocky), Tracey, (Ben) Carrie, (Jerry) and Chris (Kim). He loved spending time with his
grandchildren Shayne (Holly), Erin (Kyle), Aaron,Jennifer, Valerie (David), Olivia, Matthew,
Adam, Carlie(Dan), and Kristin(Alek).
Ted is also survived by his loving sister Marlene (Doug) and his nieces and nephews Karen,
(Cam) Doug (Donna). Ted was great uncle to Sarah, Alex (Maryna) Shawn (Catherine) and
Stephanie (Dan). Ted is fondly remembered by his niece and nephews in Northern Ireland and
Scotland. He will be missed by Stephanie (Richard) and their children Mollie and Calum. He is
also remembered with love by Darren (Ruth-Ann) and Campbell (Svetlanka) and Campbell. He
enjoyed seeing his many great grandchildren too.
Ted enjoyed hosting everyone at his cottage up on Gull Lake. We had many fun years on the
island. During these times, Ted also enjoyed visits from his dear friends Ed and Jean. Ted was
a hard worker and always busy. He loved to read and follow the news. A dog lover, he
cherished Brutus and Caesar, and he loved anyone’s dog he met. In his younger days, Ted
enjoyed sailing and scuba diving. He had many good stories to tell. Ted also loved to play
cribbage, and he could count the scores faster than anyone. His upstairs neighbours Rob and
Rachel were always so kind to Ted, sharing coffees, crib games and holiday meals.
Ted always liked to work for himself or in a partnership as a contractor. He prided himself in
being honest with his clients and for getting the job done to their satisfaction.
The past few years were really difficult for Ted, as his COPD made simply breathing so difficult.
Ted’s daughter, Leslie and his son-in-law Rick supported Ted greatly during this time. It was a
labour of love. In recent months, Ted was coughing all day long. It is a blessing and a relief to
know that his suffering has ended, and that he went peacefully in the excellent care of
Southlake hospital in Newmarket. In lieu of flowers, please feel free to make a donation to a
