It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Edward
Brenton Marshall, Port Hawkesbury, age 90, which occurred at The
Inverary Manor, Inverness, NS on Tuesday, April 5, 2022. He
passed peacefully with family members by his side.
Our father was born in Sydney, NS, January 17, 1932. He spent
his younger years delivering newspapers and groceries, until his first
job at the Sydney Steel Plant as a train brakeman, where his father
and grandfather worked before him. He then transferred these railroad
skills to the CNR, as a brakeman and a conductor for over 20 years.
After a train injury he started his second career operating a taxi
business in Port Hawkesbury, which he did up until he retired
Ed’s Taxi at age 88, arguably retired as the oldest active
cab driver around. His love for driving vehicles likely started in the
military as a young man as a driving instructor. He and our loving Mom
also enjoyed many leisurely road trips around Nova Scotia and
surrounding areas.
Dad was a proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion for over
50 years, and also proud of his military career in the Reserves and
Cape Breton Highlanders. He was also a proud member of AA where he
mentored many people. But he was particularly proud of his Marshall
roots and his railroad livelihood.
He was known for his kindness to those in need, his charm,
his sense of humour, and his love for his family, especially the
children.
He is survived by his children, Brent (Deanna), Halifax;
Donna, Dartmouth; Kevin and Karen (Albert), both of Port Hawkesbury;
his grandchildren, Jamie (Gary), Cora, Ashley (Sean), Shauna (David),
Reginald, Ronald, Tylicia, Mataya, Shanta; step-grandchildren, Olivia
and Adam, and 15 great-grandchildren. Lacy, Myles, Monte also knew him
as Grampy. He was an adored uncle to many nieces and
nephews.
He was predeceased by his loving wife of 58 years, Margaret;
son Keith; father Ralph; mother, Grace; brothers, Jack, Ralph, Leaman,
and George.
At this time we wish to express our sincere thanks to the
medical staff at Strait Richmond, and the wonderful and compassionate
staff at the Inverary Manor, Inverness.
