Edith Maria Herold Monday December 19th 2022

Herold, Edith Maria
Edith Maria Herold, born June 8 1928, passed away peacefully in the presence of her husband and son on Monday, December 19, 2022.
Survived by her husband Helmuth, son Richard (Josephine) Herold and their daughters Amanda (David Clegg) Herold, Stephanie (Stephen) Herold Pomedli and great-grandson Jay Herold Pomedli, son-in-law Brian and grandchildren James and Robert Stienstra, niece and nephews Theresa, Bill and Thomas Goetz. Predeceased by her daughter Bernadette Herold-Stienstra, her parents Alois and Elizabeth and brother Franz Thaler, sisters Maria (Ria) Goetz and Josefine (Fini) Pohl.
At age 6, Edith was displaced by World War II from her birthplace in Gottschee in Central Europe. Childhood years were spent in Kitzbuehel, Austria where she was an award winning ski racer, while working as an optician at Swarovski.
Marrying the love of her life Helmuth in 1953, Edith and Helmuth arrived in Canada on the 1st anniversary of their marriage in August 1954.
A member of the Alpine Club of Kitchener in memory of her birthplace Gottschee, Edith was a proud and grateful Canadian citizen. She closely followed world news which being all too often dismal, led to her frequent refrain “Aren’t you glad we came to Canada?!” Edith, a long time member of the Chicopee Ski Club (1st place Senior Women 1974) skied until the age of 77 years, on the way raising 2 children, writing an award winning account of her childhood in Gottschee (1964) and translating into English the history of her birthplace, “Das War Gottschee” (1977) with author Karl Schemitsch. Tireless and intelligent, Edith then returned to school in her 50’s and earned an Early Childhood Education Diploma for her 2nd career as an Educator.
Edith was always a good friend to her wonderful Carson Drive neighbours and helper to all those who knew her. She was someone her friends and family could count on in good times and bad. She will be missed dearly.
Special gratitude is offered to Edith’s PSW’s Rhea and Valery who supported Edith in her beloved home morning and night in the dark years of the pandemic, right up to her final hospital admission.
Thanks to the gentle staff in Palliative Care at KW Hospital Freeport who cared for Edith in her final days. A celebration of Edith’s life will be held at the Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick Street, Kitchener, on Thursday, December 22, 2022 from 5-8 p.m. with prayers at 7:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Anthony Daniel RC Church, 29 Midland Drive, on Friday, December 23, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. Those unable to attend may view Edith’s service on Friday via the following live stream link:www.henrywalser.com/live-streaming
