It is with immense sadness we announce the passing of our beautiful Mum, Edith, on October 18th, 2022.
Edith was born August 2nd, 1934 in St. Andrews, Scotland to William & Agnes Latimer (nee Devine) and has one sister, Audrey Jeffries (Ian) living in England.
Edith met her soon-to-be husband, Robert Philip Finlayson in 1957 and they emigrated to Canada in 1958 where they married on September 6th, 1958. Robbie sadly passed on September 20th, 1998.
Edith and Robbie had five children: Audrey Mayer (Ken), Malcolm Finlayson (predeceased October 25th, 2021), Carol Finlayson, Alan Finlayson, and Ian Finlayson.
Missing Grandma are Sarah Livsey (Scott), Robert Livsey (Daniela), Thomas Livsey, Andrew Livsey (Rika), Jack McFadden-Finlayson, James Finlayson, Spencer Finlayson, Ethan Finlayson. Edith was ”Gigi” to her great grandchild: Mila Livsey and Coast Livsey.
Edith was a Registered Nurse who worked on surgery, emergency, and labour/delivery wards. Edith was also a midwife and at opposite ends, worked as the head nurse in a long term care home in Ontario.
During their married life Edith and Robbie lived in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario, and the Northwest Territories. Edith especially enjoyed the experience of living in Inuvik. That being said, she was very happy to settle in the sunny Okanagan in Penticton.
Edith loved to volunteer in many areas especially adult literacy and reading with school children. Edith also helped at the S.O.S. Cafeteria, DBA Market, Fest of Ale, Blood Donor Clinics, Many Hats Theatre Company, and Penticton Ironman, and many we didn’t know about.
In her spare time Edith was an amazing knitter, seamstress, needle point, and an excellent cook. Family dinners were very important to Mum and she passed her love of cooking on to ALL of her children.
Edith was also an avid reader and loved to test her knowledge with Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune.
Edith owned the “legendary” Green Beanz coffee shop in Penticton for six years and entertained the patrons with her Scottish accent and sense of humour.
Mum’s last year and a half was first spent at McKinney Place in Oliver then Trinity Care Centre in Penticton. The staff at both locations developed beautiful relationships with Edith. Our family sincerely appreciates the kindness she was shown.
Special thank you to Hazel Frost and Arlene Rand for always visiting and checking on our Mum, especially after she developed Alzheimers. You were amazing friends!
Last but not least, we would like to acknowledge the amazing staff on SP3, Dr. Daniel and Dr. Burles. You were there for our beautiful Mum and for all of us. Thank you!
A Celebration of Life for Edith will be held on Saturday, November 5th at 1:00 p.m. Elks Hall – 477 Bank Avenue, Oliver BC.
