Daughters: Manon (Roy) and Tanya (Warren)

Great grandchildren: Sienna, Ryan, Alison, Seán, Niamh
Edith was born in Glen Innes, New South Wales, Australia to Alan and Jenny Pearson. She spent her early years at the family sheep farm, Kooringle, where she acquired her love of horses. She attained her Bachelor of Arts and a Diploma of Education at the University of New England, Armidale. She met her first husband, Garry Doyle, who shared her joy of travel and adventure, at University, and her first daughter, Manon was born while they still lived in Australia.
The family travelled to Africa where Edith and Garry taught for 2 years. The next step was a short time in England, 6 months in Scotland followed by immigration to Canada in 1965. Barely settled in Canada, the family was welcomed by one of the worst blizzards in Manitoba history (March, 1966).
Edith taught in Whitemouth, Eriksdale and Selkirk before moving to Winnipeg. While she was teaching, she earned her Bachelor of Education at the University of Manitoba. There was also time in the summer holidays to travel to various parts of the world and learn more about other ways of life.
Prior to the move to Winnipeg, she obtained her Masters of Library Science in Nashville, Tennessee. Although she enjoyed teaching, she relished the opportunity to work in the school library, sharing her love of books and learning with elementary school students.
While in Winnipeg, she met and married her second husband, Ray Draper, who also shared her desire to travel, seeing new places and meeting new people. A few years later, Edith’s second daughter Tanya, was born and was quickly introduced to the family passion for travel.
Edith became involved with the International Association of School Librarianship, where she was a loyal and constant attendee at the international conferences. These conferences enabled her to also meet many good friends along the way and served as great conversation topics when she returned to Winnipeg.
During her career as a librarian, she worked at several different schools in the Winnipeg School Division. At the time of her retirement, she had been working at both Robertson and Inkster schools.
In her last years, she moved into the Lions Personal Care Home, and although she could no longer travel, she could still enjoy sitting in a sunny room, reading a book from the well-stocked library.
In lieu of flowers, we ask that you consider a donation of books to your local elementary school. Edith was always so excited when the new Scholastic catalogue arrived and she revelled in the joy in her students’ eyes when the new books were delivered to the school.
To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die. – Thomas Campbell
