DOUGLAS: Edith
June 29, 1930 – July 25, 2022
Edith Margaret Louise, was born June 29, 1930 in Watrous Saskatchewan to parents James and Elizabeth (Hayes) Douglas, who both had immigrated to Canada from Northern Ireland.
Edith attended Amazon School, a short jaunt from the family farm. Life was the farm, she enjoyed all the animals, dogs, cats, cattle, horses and her pony. After her father passed, Edith farmed alongside her uncle, Joseph Hayes, who lived a short distance down the road. She was a hard worker on the farm and could likely outwork a lot of men, no task was daunting. Edith and Joe continued to live on the Douglas homestead and farmed for a lot of years together, later in life they would spend winters in Watrous and summers at the farm, eventually moving permanently into town on 4th Ave West. With anticipation of Irish company coming they decided to buy a slightly bigger home on 3rd Ave west. After Joe’s passing, Edith continued to live there and eventually took at suite at the Manitou Lodge, after a brief illness, she then moved to a room at the lodge and eventually after the new facility was completed in 2012, resided there until her passing.
The highlight of her life was travelling with Joe to Ireland and Wales visiting relatives and friends that she had corresponded with over the years, she especially was excited for the visit with her Aunt Edith and her family in Wales.
Edith was predeceased by her father in 1953, her mother in 1959, her uncle Joe in 1992, she is survived by cousins here in Canada and in Ireland.
Edith passed away at Manitou Lodge in the Watrous District Health Complex, Watrous, SK on Monday, July 25, 2022. A Memorial Service will take place at Watrous United Church, Watrous, SK on Friday, July 29, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Jo-Ann Hills officiating. Interment will take place in Watrous Cemetery.
