NEWELL, Earl Francis
24 November, 1944 – 14 August, 2022
Passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Sunday August 14 2022 at 77 years of age. Treasured son of the late Richard and Florence Newell. Beloved husband of Rosemary Newell (Pilon).
Loving and devoted father of Marie (Paul Visser), Mark Armitage (Louise), Michael Armitage (Tracey), Lisa (Tony Walker), Laura Adamson (Rod Marshall), John Armitage and the late Paul Armitage (Donna).
Earl will be missed by his siblings, Richard Newell, Lynda (Charles Maw), Leyone Edmondson, Ron Newell (Cathy), Tim Newell (Sharon), Margaret (Clifford MacPherson) and his many nieces and nephews.
Poppy will be remembered with love and affection, by his grandchildren Jessica, Spenser, Connor, Amber, Jesse, Danielle, Alex, Nicole, Justin, Jordan, Shannon, Kaitlyn, Taylor, Sidney, Brad, Jarrett, Camryn, Addison and great grandchildren, Justin, Paisley, Benji, Ophelia and Brier.
Earl will be remembered as a kind soul who loved unconditionally and completely. His ability to make and maintain friendships was legendary. This included a cherished 70+ year friendship with his best friend Bob Burton, his friendship with bonus little sister Eleanor Damant (Ford) and his colleague and friend Tony Bowen. Also known as Newly and Poppy to his family, Earl raised 6 stepchildren as well as his daughter. He was kind, patient and was the kind of dad one wished for. Earl was known for his fairness, openness and as a man who cared with his whole self.
Newly believed that you should not just live in your community, but that it was your responsibility to contribute to it. As such, he was a dedicated Scout Leader for many years. He coached girls and ladies fastball/softball, sharing a sport he loved by passing down his passion to his daughter and grandson, who have followed in his footsteps mentoring young women through fastball. When not coaching he was known to travel around Ontario watching family play and coach the sport he loved so much.
He loved to dance and it showed. He and Rosemary were amazing partners both on and off the dance floor. Everyone loved to watch them, so in sync and so in love.
Earl loved to travel and was the first to try new foods and immerse himself in the culture that surrounded him. The Dominican Republic stole his heart years ago and he and Rosemary spent many winters enjoying the weather, the adventures and the people. He also loved to camp and ride motorcycles and passed down his love of riding to his grandsons. Earl was known to say that there was nothing better than cruising the open road with the wind in your face.
At Earl’s request, there will be no formal funeral service. His wish for everyone was that they take the time to make memories with friends and family, for this is truly, what life is all about. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Big Brothers Big Sisters Clarington Mentorship Program clarington.bigbrothersbigsisters.ca/donate/ or Their Opportunity Durham Region www.canadahelps.org/en/dn/m/74629 . Both organizations serve underprivileged and disadvantaged youth.
