Dwayne Gordon Smith 1942 2022

Dwayne Gordon
Smith departed this world after a brief illness, but a
lengthy battle to a resting peace amongst us.
Born to the late Leigh and Doris
(McInnis) Smith, of Oxford, he came into this world on a backward note
at the homestead in 1942. In the early morning of May 21,
2022, our Dad and loving husband departed with a view of the beautiful
moon over the Pugwash Harbour, with all his family by his side and
Charlie Pride playing Dad’s favourite music while the sports channel
aired a hockey game in the background.
Dad, AKA Papa, Papa Smurf, Smitty,
Dwayne Sr. and fondly just “Dad” resided in Rockley in his
grandparents home for the past 50 years. He worked numerous
entrepreneurial jobs, including meat cutting and Toledo
Scales. He ran many business, including the Red and White
Grocery store, the arcade, a gas station, a scrap business, a wood
business, a restaurant equipment business, and the Ice Cream
stand. He lobster fished with the great Pauley boys, his
favorite job. He taught all his children the work ethic they
have today. Dad was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the
Lions Club. For enjoyment, Dad enjoyed everything
outside. His children and grandchildren grew up with
boating, 4 wheeling, and snowmobiles; anything with a motor and a gas
engine. We won’t talk about the time that the truck got
stuck on the sand bar at Heather’s Beach or the late night
“leisure boat rides/sociables” down the Port Howe River. His
favourite time was when he was at home with his precious
“Lila” – Mom – Delilah. He would be lost without
her. Mom is the family Jewel and our “diamond”
rock.
Dad was predeceased by his sisters Vonda
(Ron) Keating and Gwynn Bruner; sister in infancy Ardis; son-in-law
Jerry Sewell; and brother in law Aubrey Brown.
He is survived by his loving wife, our
awesome mom, Delilah, whom without her amazing care, he wouldn’t have
seen 80! His children Dwayne Jr. (Marion Duffy); Ardis
Smith; Deidre (Robert Devine); Anthony (Angela) Smith; 7
grandchildren, Garrett, Zander, Cooper, Devon, Brea, Giselle, and
Katelyn, whom he would light up every time he would see them during
their frequent visits to Nanny and Papa’s house. There were
many shared roast beef meals at the big farm table.
In addition, he is survived by his
sister Betty Brown; brother-in-law Peter Bruner; numerous nieces,
nephews, friends and business acquaintances. Dad knew
everybody. His stories will live on through his children,
grandchildren, friends and colleagues forever.
Cheers dad! May you enjoy many
more sunsets over the harbour… we love you.
