ABBOTT
Dwayne Raymond
July 3rd, 1965 – November 13th, 2022
It is with shock and disbelief that I announce the passing of my entire world.
Words can not describe the man that was Dwayne Abbott. At 57 years young, he had lived an already extraordinary life.
Dwayne was raised within a large family, and unfortunately lost his father and idol at a young age. Growing up in Musgrave Harbour, he had a carefree attitude and zest for life. His hours were spent fishing, picking berries, playing street hockey with his brothers, camping, making fires (dodging the cops) while being the local comedian.
At the ripe age of seventeen, Dwayne enlisted in the Canadian Military and eventually joined the 2nd Battalion of The Royal Canadian Regiment, Gagetown, Oromocto, NB. Over the next seven years, his service would bring him all across Canada, to Norway and Scotland, before returning home to continue life in Gander.
After graduating from the Commercial Cooking Program at the College of the North Atlantic, Dwayne began his career in the kitchen. Dwayne proudly formed “Abbott’s Catering”, and began operation from the Elk’s Club, Gander. He continued his work with The Gander Golf Club, NAV Canada, and The Steele Community Centre.
Together, Dwayne and I tried a new adventure when becoming the owners and operators of “The Inn on Bennett” in 2013. This venture brought many people through our doors and into his company, and he made lifelong connections with people from all over the world.
In 2016, his lifelong dream of becoming a restaurant owner finally came true when the opportunity to acquire “Rosie’s Restaurant and Bakery” became a reality. He quickly earned a reputation as one of the best. He developed quite a successful business that amazed him daily. Respected by many, especially by his staff, who he kept entertained on a regular basis. He was truly the heart of our restaurant.
Amongst it all, he found room for so much excitement, entertainment and pleasure. His list of travel runs long, and the list of friends he has made runs even longer. Together as a couple, we have seen parts of the world that some could only wish to view. From sailing the Mississippi, visiting the home of Elvis, helicopter ride over the Grand Canyon, walking the streets of New Orleans and stepping on a live volcano in Costa Rica just to name a few of our many travel memories.
His Cuban adventures have been experiences that no one else could ever imagine. Traveling to Cuba was like going home – visiting our Cuban family on every trip.
Having our Cuban godson, Jason and his family added so much love to our life.
Over the past few years, Dwayne and I have thoroughly enjoyed local travel and summertime camping in the RV. He said he was practicing for retirement when we would “Ride off into the Sunset” together. Although our future plans have been robbed, our memories will last forever.
Loved ones that cleared the path before him are His Father, Claude Abbott; Sister, Claudette Abbott; Father in law, Allan Yetman; Cuban Brother, Edeimys Romero; Grandparents Frank and Laura Abbott and Max and Ivy Cuff.
