Smith, Dr. John Clegg – Age 80, of East Gore. With profound grief we announce the passing of Dr. John Clegg Smith on January 6, 2022. Born in New Westminster, BC, he was a son of the late Wilfred V. Smith and Rose F. Smith.
John was raised in Vancouver attending UBC, as a student he worked at the Fish Hatchery in Jasper National Park. Small fish were back-packed to stock mountain lakes. He completed his Bachelor of Science and Masters in Zoology at UBC and then moved to the Bedford Institute of Oceanography, Marine Ecology Lab to do research. John completed his PhD at Dalhousie University. He continued his research at Gulf Fisheries Centre in Moncton, NB.
John raised tropical fish throughout his entire life. He was interested in photography with the Lighthouse Photo Group, the NS Photo Guild. He was a keen gardener in East Gore and was a member of the Nova Scotia Dahlia Society, the Daylily Society and the Nova Scotia Orchid Society.
John’s joy in life was family. He is survived by his wife, Mary Louise (Oddy); daughter, Stephanie, Vancouver, BC; son, Denis (Sawitree); grandson, Herbert Andrew, Phenom-Penh, Cambodia; and son, Ryan (Colleen); grandsons, Brogan Francis and Nolan John, Calgary, Alta.
He was predeceased by brothers-in-law, Herbert M. Oddy, Norman R. Oddy; cousins, Bob, Patsy McKernan, Allen, and Laura Robinson.
For the care and kindness extended to John, the family wishes to thank all at Colchester East Hants Health Centre and the Colchester East Hants Victorian Order of Nurses. We also thank friends and neighbors who have helped us without fail.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Gore District Volunteer Fire Department or Colchester East Hants VON.
