Dr. Bryn Kulmatycki
Dr. M. Bryn Kulmatycki of St. Albert, passed away peacefully at Foyer Lacombe Hospice in St. Albert on Thursday, April 7 at age 72 years, after losing his battle with cancer; his family by his side.
Bryn will be lovingly remembered and missed by his wife, Shirley (nee Melnyk); and daughter, Tracy (Greg) McLellan; two sons, Ian (Morgan) and Preston; grandchildren, Dylan, Lily, Jayden (Preston) Parker and Reede (Ian); his two brothers, Eugene (Zonia) and John (Diane); mother-in-law, Annie Melnyk and numerous nieces and nephews. Bryn is predeceased by his parents, Mike and Cassie Kulmatycki; granddaughter, Payton Kulmatycki; and father-in-law, William Melnyk.
After graduating from high school in Vegreville, Bryn went on to receive his Bachelor of Education from the University of Calgary. He further pursued and achieved his Master of Education Administration at the University of Alberta. In 2009, Bryn successfully completed his PhD in Educational Leadership, where his thesis was recognized as a National Thesis Award Nominee. He became a member of the Oxford Roundtable at Oxford University. Bryn also received a certificate in Educational Management from Harvard University Graduate School of Education.
Bryn began his career as a teacher and principal. He paused his education career in 1976 to become a licenced stockbroker. After that he went on to become superintendent for the HTC Regional School Division and then Grande Prairie Catholic Separate School Division. Bryn was appointed President and Vice Chancellor at Newman Theological College and in 2011, he accepted the position of Vice President Academic and Associate Vice President Academic at the College of New Caledonia in Prince George, British Columbia. From April 2015 until his retirement in 2022, Bryn was the president of Northern Lights College, Dawson Creek, British Columbia where he initiated, among other projects, the expansion of a new trades training facility and created the Centre for Innovation for Indigenous Education.
Throughout Bryn’s career he served in various executive leadership positions on multiple boards, agencies, and professional organizations, and was conferred a life member of several educational organizations. He was appointed adjudicator for the BC Premiers’ Service Award, a board member for the Colleges and Institutes Canada, recipient of the Rotary President’s Choice Award and received Apostolic Recognition from Pope Benedict XVI. He has also lectured, presented, and facilitated workshops on leadership topics in Canada, The United States, New Zealand, and England.
Divine Liturgy will be held at Exaltation of the Holy Cross Ukrainian Catholic Church at 9003 – 153 Avenue, Edmonton on Thursday, April 21 at 10:00 a.m. with Reverend Janko Herbut officiating. Interment will follow at St. Michael’s Cemetery, Edmonton.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dr. Bryn Kulmatycki Recognition Endowment Fund, a scholarship awarded annually to a college student attending Northern Lights College, or a charity of your choice in Bryn’s name.
