Dr Andrew Ferguson Fraser (Andy) passed away peacefully in his sleep at Carbonear General Hospital. Andrew was pre-deceased by his wife, Bernice, in 2016 and his oldest son, Neil, in 2018. He is survived by his six children: Colin, Ian, Kenneth, Rhona, Gordon and Sheila. By eight grandchildren: Joanne, Rosie, Hazel, Claire, Robert, Alex, Vhairi and Sean. Also, by five great-grandchildren: Chloe, Zac, Mikey, Matthew and Henry. Andrew also leaves to mourn Bernice’s children: Anne, Sheilagh, Dan, Brian, Margot, Moya, Mary and Terry.
Andy adopted Newfoundland as his home over forty years ago after spending most of his life in Scotland. His youth was spent alternating between Glasgow and the Isle of Skye. It was on Skye that his love of Highland ponies began which quickly spread to all working breeds including the Newfoundland pony. Andy’s general interest in animals led him to become a vet. He received his education in Glasgow, Scotland and Guelph, Canada. Andrew was an agricultural veterinary practitioner in Britain, North America and Jamaica for 14 years. He was Director of Animal Care and Professor of Surgery (Veterinary) at Memorial University in Newfoundland and was previously a Professor in the Department of Clinical Studies, Western College of Veterinary Medicine, Saskatchewan and Senior Lecturer in the Department of Surgery, Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, University of Edinburgh, Scotland. Andrew also served as the Veterinary Director at the Newfoundland Pony and Horse Sanctuary, Trinity Bay – a facility for aged or infirm horses and was a founding member of the society setup to protect the breed. Andy wrote numerous books on animal welfare, behaviour, and equine history, some still in publication.
The Fraser family is forever appreciative that their father was able to live independently till the end of his life with the unfailing dedication and loving care of Lillian Osmond, and the support of the kindest of friends: Dan Hogan, and Cynthia and Joe Crawford.
As per Andrew’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral.
Inurnment will take place on Saturday, June 18, 2022 from Holy Sepulcher Cemetery at 10 am.
Andrew will be greatly missed.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Dr Andrew Fraser 2022..
