Douglas William Alexander Muir, QC, BA, LLB
With tremendous sadness we announce the passing of Douglas William Alexander Muir. Doug
was born in Hamilton on October 17, 1935, the son of Alexander Muir and Flora (Watson) Muir.
He graduated from Hillfield College in 1952, studied at Royal Roads and completed his BA at
McMaster University before studying law at the University of Toronto Law School. He was called
to the bar of Ontario in 1962.
He will forever be remembered as a loving husband to Joan (Humphrey), brother to Mary Lou
Tupper, devoted father to Gordon (Joanne), Robert (Bess) and Alexandra (George), and
grandfather to Alexander, William, Evelyn, and Jess.
Doug led a very active life, playing cricket and football at Hillfield, boxing at Royal Roads, an
avid runner for many years and scuba diving together with Joan.
Summer weekends were often spent at their cottage on the shore of Lake Huron near Sauble
Beach where Doug and Joan first met in 1955.
Always kind and generous, Doug will be remembered for helping so many people through his
law practice, where he practiced in Burlington what he called “happy law” for 60 years.
His community work included the Hillfield Board of Governors, a founding member and
volunteer of Club Challenge, dedicated to teaching people with disabilities to scuba dive, and a
co-founder of the Mozart Chamber Orchestra of Burlington. Doug’s dedication to community
was also reflected in his lifelong interest in politics and his support for the Liberal Party.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Joseph Brant Hospital.
