It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Douglas George Page at University Hospital in London on July 14, 2022 at the age of 90. He was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Shirley (Lang) in 2004. Beloved father of Chris (Doug) Henderson of Guelph, Deb (Tom) Shurrie of Caledon East and Diane Page (John Maybury) of Port Elgin. Cherished grandfather to Kristie (James) Webster, Craig Henderson, Trish Shurrie (Rickie Dhindsa), Emily Henderson (Kyle Banton-Jones), Kyle Shurrie (Madison Lee), and Jennifer, Sean, and Eric Jaeger. Predeceased by brother-in-law Jim Cole, sister-in-law Bertha Lang, and nephew Richard Janes.
Doug was born in Sudbury on November 12, 1931, the elder child of the late Sidney and Jean (Hilyer) Page. He received his early education at Central Public School in St. Marys and graduated from Stratford Collegiate Vocational Institute in 1950. Doug attended Western University graduating with an Honours Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Administration in 1954 and he completed his Bachelor of Laws Degree, specializing in criminal law, at Osgoode Hall in 1959. He practised law at Sanders and Sanders in St. Thomas, at Lerners’ in London, and from July 2nd, 1964 until his retirement on July 30th, 1993, he was the Crown Attorney for Perth County. Doug belonged to the County of Perth Law Association and served a term as President. He was a member of Rotary for 61 years and he served as President of the Stratford Rotary Club in 1978-1979. He was the proud recipient of two Paul Harris Awards. Doug was a member of K40 and served as program director. For many years, he canvassed for both the Canadian Cancer Society and the Ontario March of Dimes.
Doug was a proud Canadian, a prolific reader, a lover of live theatre, a social bridge and cribbage player, a swimmer, a world traveller, a photographer, a story teller, a music lover, an avid backyard bird watcher and worthy squirrel opponent, a boater, a fisherman, and an avid sports fan – he was a diehard Green Bay Packers and Boston Celtics fan. He also cheered for the Raptors, the Maple Leafs and the Argonauts. He will be remembered by all as a skilled adversary in court and for his incredible strength, positive attitude in the face of adversity, sense of humour, meticulousness, honesty and integrity. He was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who will be dearly missed.
Visitation will be held at the W.G. 1. I am sorry to hear of this news. My father always spoke so highly of Mr. Page as they were members of the local Rotary. Of course how bad could he be if he was a Green Bay Packers fan?! Any time I spoke with Mr. Page he always struck me as a true and sincere gentleman. My heartfelt condolences to the entire Page family.
