Douglas Doug Vernon Whitworth 19322021

Douglas “Doug” Vernon Whitworth
1932-2021
Douglas “Doug” Vernon Whitworth passed away on
December 20, 2021 at the age of 89 in O’Leary,
Prince Edward Island. He was born on July 10, 1932, in Burnaby,
BC, to Vern and Ruth (nee Ferris)
Whitworth. Doug grew up
in Vancouver where he attended Edith Cavell Elementary and King
Edward
Secondary. At King Edward, Doug excelled in
badminton and track and field, and was president of the
student union for two years. Doug served as valedictorian upon
his graduation in 1950.
Doug attended the University of
British Columbia, graduating with a Bachelor of Law Degree in 1955.
He
was called to the bar in 1958 and worked as a lawyer and
partner with Harper Grey Easton until his
retirement. He
was honoured to receive the designation of Queen’s Counsel
and to have developed
strong relationships with special
colleagues and clients throughout his professional career.
Doug was a passionate reader, history buff and life-long fan of
the New York Yankees! He encouraged
his children to pursue
their interests through books and enthusiastically seized any
opportunity to
“discuss” the classics, history,
religion, philosophy or his favorite baseball team!
Upon
his retirement, Doug moved to the Sunshine Coast where he relished the
opportunity to enjoy life
in a small community. He pursued
gardening and cooking, enjoyed a houseful of pets, and cherished
his
experiences with his bridge group, monthly
men’s discussion group and community church. In 2019,
Doug set out on a new adventure with a move to another small
community, this time on Prince Edward
Island.
Doug drew strength from his Christian faith throughout his life.
He was committed to his community
church and was especially
proud of his work supporting the Anglican Church of Canada. As a young
man
Doug was active at St. James Anglican Church in
Vancouver and later in life as a member of the parish of
St. Columba of Iona in Halfmoon Bay. He said that he found peace
and inspiration in reading the Bible
and through
prayer.
Doug loved and was proud of his children,
grandchildren and great granddaughter. Each of the
“Whitworth” children hold special memories of our times
with him. We are looking forward to gathering
as a family
to celebrate our dad, sharing good food, stories, and our love for him
and for each other.
Doug is survived by his sister Joyce
(Marvin) Shannon; his children Cathy, Stephen (Leah), Mark
(Pam),
and their mother Gwynn; Trisha (Eddy), Suzette
(Gord), John (Lily), Cathy-Anne (Jay), Christopher (Diana)
and their mother Damaris; Connor and his mother Barbie; his
grandchildren Jonathan (Lau), Jessica,
Toma, Paul (Nikki),
Jacob, Luke, Sam, Max, Michelle, Ryan, Fox, Tessa, Jesse, Adrianna and
Isabella and
great granddaughter Mary.
The
family wishes to extend special thanks to Barbie Moudahi for her love,
care and support for Doug as
his health declined. A service
will be held in Vancouver at a later date.
