DOROTHY MIELITZ (née Zwick) passed away in comfort and peace after 105 years of gentle loving kindness. Predeceased by her husband, John Henry Mielitz, she will be sorely missed by her brothers and sisters John, Violet, Pauline, Walter, Edward and Harold; her children Ron (Sandi), Carol (Doug) and Lyle (Marilyn); grandchildren Darci (Brian), Wade (Shelly), Brent (Amanda) and Evan (Samantha); great-grandchildren James (Karissa), Scotty (Shelby), Dylan (Kelsey), Amy, Joel, Noah, Emily and Lucas; and great-great-grandchildren Jay and Liam.
Born near Mantario, Saskatchewan, Dorothy was the third of 13 children born to George and Caroline (née Becker) Zwick. After several moves, the family settled into farming in Ryerson, Saskatchewan in 1926. This was an exceptional family, not only in size, but also in hard work, laughter, positive thinking, closeness and love. Their values and way of life are a legacy that Dorothy and her siblings have passed on to their children and the generations that have followed.
Dorothy married Johnny Mielitz on April 1, 1935, at Bethany School near Walpole, Saskatchewan. The depression and severe droughts made it a very tough time to start married life. With no harvest on their rented land, the young couple had to seek work in Dryden – Dorothy as a cook in the hotel and Johnny in the lumber camps. Eventually, they acquired land near Walpole where they farmed until 1968. Life was busy for Dorothy, raising three children, tending a huge garden and helping with the farm. She also boarded teachers to earn extra money to make ends meet. This is how she met Jean Bogner (née Dennis), one of her closest, long-time friends.
In 1968, Johnny and Dorothy moved to Moosomin. To supplement their retirement income, Dorothy worked at the Pioneer Lodge. Johnny died in 1982 but Dorothy continued to have a full, busy life. Her expanding family was the joy of her life. She delighted in their visits. “Apple Grandma” or “Choo-Choo Grandma” was very special in the eyes of her grandkids, including the greats and great-greats.
In addition to family, her passions were gardening and dancing. At the farm, Dorothy was known for her luscious strawberries and spectacular hollyhocks. In Moosomin, family loved to gather in her back garden with its shady apple trees, dazzling array of flowers and bountiful raspberry patch.
Always a graceful dancer, Dorothy came to her first Mainline Singles Dance at age 66. She loved pattern dancing and was involved in several clubs, dancing regularly until age 97. Pattern dance teachers, Hilda and Johan Ingjaldson, became fast friends. Dorothy’s family is thankful to Hilda, Johan (now deceased) and Hilda’s son, Ron, for all the loving support they have given Dorothy in her later years. Dorothy’s two sons, Ron and Lyle, and their wives also want to give special acknowledgement to their sister Carol and niece Darci. These two women provided constant, creative, loving help and care for Dorothy over decades. Their unswerving, unselfish support, especially in her last days, will never be forgotten.
People have asked Dorothy the secret of her happy longevity. Her answer was wise and simple: “Just make the best of what life brings”.
