Dorothy Sarah Keats, 97, of Newman’s Cove, passed peacefully away on April 7th, 2022 at Golden Heights Manor Bonavista.
She was born to the late George and Fanny Strickland, August 23, 1924, in Newman’s Cove, NL. The youngest of three daughters, she did not attend school until the age of nine, but completed grades 1-9 in six short years.
She married the late Bert Keats on December 18, 1947 and they lived together in Newman’s Cove their entire lives. Dorothy is survived by one daughter Ursula Skiffington; two grand children, whom she was also a mother too: Kimberly Hogan (Pat), Lorie Skiffington Pritchett (Newton); two great-grandchildren, Holly Hogan, Coby Skiffington; two sisters in law, Annie Baker, Ursula Keats; and a host of nieces and nephews. Dorothy was predeceased by both her parents, four siblings and her loving husband Bert, who passed in 2019.
Dorothy aspired to be a nurse and had secured the opportunity to train in 1943. However, two weeks before her start date her grandmother had taken ill. Her father told her she would have to care for her grandmother and therefore would not be able to do her training. She respected her father’s wishes and became her grandmother’s care giver until she passed. Although Dorothy did not receive formal training as a nurse, she spent her lifetime caring and being a care giver for those she loved.
Dorothy was a special person. The matriarch of the family. She had a great sense of humour, hard working, loving, caring and kind. She loved animals, especially her little dog “Teddy.” She was the one who nurtured us, prayed over us, worried about us, guided us, and supported us. She was the BEST mom. She will be loved always and will forever be in our hearts.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, April 9, 2022 between the hours of 2:00 to 4:00pm and 6:00 to 8:00pm, at Newman’s Cove United Church.
Funeral service will take place at 11:00am Sunday, April 10, 2022 at Newman’s Cove United Church.
