COOKE, Dorothy Jean
December 28, 1925 – May 23, 2022
Dorothy Jean Cooke passed away peacefully in the evening of Monday, May 23, 2022, surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife of the late G. B. “Joe” Cooke, and a wonderful mother to Lani, John (Laura), Jennifer, Tracey (Andrew), Kaireen (John) and Joni (Jose). She leaves behind 10 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Dorothy was born on a family in Lochwinnoch and grew up in the town of Renfrew. She studied Social Work at the University of Toronto, and worked for the Children’s Aid before she married and returned home. She and Joe were great friends to the developmentally disabled, serving as founders of the first Community Living in Renfrew County.
She was a great listener, devoting her full attention to people.
Dorothy prepared delicious meals at her home in Renfrew and at the family cottage on the Ottawa River. She was a talented painter. As her children grew, she was able to spend more time studying art and learning new techniques in water colour and life drawing. Her brilliant paintings can be found in many homes in the Ottawa Valley and beyond.
Following Joe’s retirement, he and Dorothy played host to friends and family at their sugar bush in Admaston and they travelled widely. Dorothy lived out her final years surrounded by the wonderful people at Quail Creek Retirement Home.
Dorothy’s final care has been entrusted to Zohr Family Funeral Home, 85 Munroe Avenue East, Renfrew where visitation will be held on Thursday, May 26, 2022 from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. A Funeral Service will be held at Trinity St. Andrew’s United Church on Friday morning at 11:00 a.m. followed by a private family interment at the Goshen Cemetery. Those desiring, may consider a donation to the Community Living Renfrew County South in memory of Dorothy and here dedication to the developmentally disabled.
