It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved angel, Dorothy Amundrud (nee Burkart), on Thursday, September 22, 2022, at the age of 93 years.
Mom grew up on a farm east of Holdfast where she shared family chores with her ten siblings. The family lived through tough times during the war and the hardships the drought brought. These times made her the strong woman she became and a leader of many things.
Following graduation, Mom attended Normal School and obtained her teaching certificate. She taught at various schools over a three-year period. It was in those years that she had an avid interest in playing ball, and it was during the sports days that she and Dad met and fell in love; they got married in 1949. They worked side by side building their future together. Mom hauled grain, cooked meals, taught us kids our ABCs in the grain truck and was an all-around trooper. Mom took oil painting classes, sewed many outfits for herself and friends and Halloween costumes and carnival outfits for the kids. We cannot count the numerous wedding shower books and anniversary books she made over the years. Her love of music led her to join the Sweet Adelines. Mom spent hours putting jigsaw puzzles together as well as doing various word puzzles. As a great community leader and supporter, Mom joined many organizations, boards and committees at home and in Arizona. She continued her love of teaching with 4H and paper tole classes. Mom was crowned the Queen at Sun Valley Park in Arizona for her contributions to the park.
Mom and Dad had a full circle of amazing friends and spent many hours with them at the curling rink, sports days, cabarets, Grey Cup parties, camping trips, playing cards and vacationing together over their 43 years together. Mom and Dad found a new world in Arizona; they made new friendships and enjoyed new adventures. Mom continued to spend her winters in Arizona after Dad passed.
In 2014, Mom moved off the farm and into the Manor in Davidson. She later moved to Melville into St. Paul Lutheran Home where she remained until her passing. Family and friends were a very important part of Mom’s life, and she absolutely loved spending time visiting, laughing and sharing great stories with all.
Mom leaves to mourn: her children, Kim (Keith) Rathgeber, Danny (Jan) Amundrud and Jill (Greg) Amundrud; grandchildren Lindsay, Mandy, James (Darrien), Ryan (Kyla), Karli, Kris (Laura), Kattlyn (Irene), Kyle (Victoria) and Kevin; great-grandchildren Kayden, Dillan, Greyson, Tayler, Madison, Taylor, Jacob, Joshua, Keenan, Kaiden, Eleanor and Hugh. She is also survived by her brother, Dan (Lillian) Burkart, sister-in-law Sal Amundrud and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Ellwyn, and many extended family members.
The family would like to thank the staff at St. Paul Lutheran Home, Dr. A. Eshawesh and Kim Rutzki for their compassion and care. The recreation team and spiritual leaders allowed Mom to continue her love of entertainment and her faith in God, and we are thankful for every person who touched Mom’s life during her time at SPLH.
