With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our
dear mother, grandmother, and wife, Doris Ruth Buchanan, of Andrews of
Summerside and formerly O’Leary, at the age of 88. With
family by her side, the death occurred peacefully on Saturday,
December 24th at the Palliative Care Unit of the Prince County
Hospital.
Beloved wife of Warner Buchanan for over 71 years, and
loving mother of Janet Adams (Brian), Virginia Gray, Elmer (Jill
Jenks), Gordon (Bernadette), Mary Getson (Dana), and Donald (Bella).
She will be sadly missed by her many grandchildren and
great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by her parents,
Elmer and Ruth (Matthews) MacLellan, and sister, Lois Ann, as well as
sister-in-laws, Jenny and Gladys.
With Warner by her side, Doris worked hard on the family
farm while raising six children. In later years, Doris worked outside
the home at a number of jobs, including as the Activity
Director at Maplewood Manor and Wedgewood Manor. In 1986,
Doris found her entrepreneur spirit and opened the Lady Slipper
community care facility in O’Leary and, in 1988, the
Buchanan Lodge in Alberton.
Doris was very active in her local church as a UCW and
choir member, the Women’s Institute, and as a 4-H Leader.
She was one of the founding members of community schools in PEI, and
she was proud to serve on numerous Boards such as the
O’Leary Credit Union, Federation of Agriculture, and West
Prince Board of Trade.
Our sincerest thanks to the wonderful staff at Andrews of
Summerside, the PCH Emergency staff, and Palliative Care staff for
their kind and compassionate care during this difficult time.
Resting at Ferguson Funeral Home and Chapel, O’Leary, a
private family visitation and funeral to take place on Saturday,
December 31st. Interment to follow in Bloomfield United Church
Cemetery.
In memory of Doris, memorials can be sent directly to
the
Bloomfield United Cemetery.
