Obituary
On June 5, 2022, Doris Roberta Turner entered into Gods paradise to be reunited with Dad, after 11 long years.
Doris was born Aug 15, 1928 to Ted and Ada Brown at the farm near Craigend Alberta. She grew up on the farm together with her brothers and sisters, and in her teens moved with family to Calgary where she completed her high school. After graduating she worked at United Grain Growers in Calgary as a secretary. Her younger sister Betty had a summer job babysitting for the Innes family in Sylvan Lake and while on a trip here to visit, she met our dad, Charlie. They married in 1949 and ran “May and Turner” Meat market and grocery store with our uncle Jack. Three children were born to them while living in the attached home at the back of the store.
In 1963 they sold the store and bought their dream farm just west of Sylvan Lake (now part of Fox Run)
Mom was a very hard worker and was dedicated to whatever she was working on at the moment. Together with dad they painted, renovated, ploughed, planted, grew, harvested, and tended to their family and home, and land. That was the best place any 3 kids could ever grow up. Complete with ponies, chickens, cats, dogs, and the occasional orphaned lamb that had been given to us to tend to over the summer.
Over the years mom worked as a bookkeeper for Untinen Garage, and secretary at the Town of Sylvan Lake Office. She was a tireless volunteer with her church and her town. You would often see a Carnival snowman at the winter festival… that was mom. She spent many years also volunteering at Sylvan Lake Archives. She sang along with dad for many, many years with the Presbyterian church choir.
Mom planned and hosted many family reunions at the farm, as well as “Cobbs” staff party BBQ’s, Choir parties and BBQ’s.
Mom is predeceased by her husband Charlie 2011, her parents, and 7 brothers and sisters, as well as all of our dad’s brothers and sisters.
She is survived by her Brother David (Anne) Brown, her children Tom (Dorothy) Turner, Allan (Irene) Turner, and Ann (Brian) Nielsen. Six grandchildren, Cody (Marty) Toews, Tanner (Lee) Nielsen, Becky Turner(Dave MacRae), Jessica (Glen) Nylund, Hanna and Ria Turner, and 9 great grandchildren, Jake, Kaleb, Iris, Jayda, Jenna, Myles, McCullum, Lachlan, and Elaya. As well as many nieces and nephews.
Mom will be so missed and there will always be a spot in our hearts that will carry her love and our memories, of life with her and dad. We look forward to the day that we will see her again!
As an expression of sympathy, donations can be made in Doris’s name to the Bethany Care Centre, Sylvan Lake, Alberta.
