Doris Hicks nee Hynes CARD OF THANKS April 1 1939 June 13 2022

Obituary
The family of the late Doris Hicks (Hynes) would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to many people who helped during the recent passing of their mother. We are grateful to those who gave flowers, made donations, brought food, visited the funeral home, shared the stories, attended the funeral, sent cards, made calls, and posted lovely tributes. Mom would have been very humbled by the outpouring of love and kindness. We appreciated the compassionate assistance of Country Haven staff and Rev Jocelyn Cook throughout the process.
We must also thank again the staff of 4 South at Long Term Care and Dr. Bob O’Driscoll for their care and support during Mom’s last few years. We appreciate it all so much!
It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Doris Hicks (nee Hynes) on June 13, 2022 at the Corner Brook Long Term Care Facility, at the age of 83. Doris was an amazing woman! Besides being a busy wonderful mother to 7 children, she was also a successful businesswoman (owning B&D Superette and rental properties), a musician (singing in 2 choirs, and playing guitar, accordion, and piano) and an athlete (skiing, curling, skating, swimming and softball). Besides her busy family and work schedule, she still found time to do volunteer work, giving back in many ways to others and frequently raised money for charities. She was often called upon to do screech-ins and would also bring her Newfoundland Dog to the cruise ships for tourists to see and have pictures taken with the dog. She had a great sense of humour and brought fun to everyday life, even doing the laundry by playing music and dancing with her children around the washing machine. She had many expressions and words of her own creation that will always bring a chuckle to those who knew her well. She particularly enjoyed times at her cabin at Pinchgut Lake and was happiest when there were music and people around her. If there is a rock and roll heaven, she is already in the line up looking to be part of the band.
In later years, she suffered breast cancer and complications from broken bones and then dementia. She remained pleasant to the end and will be forever remembered by those who loved her dearly. Special thanks are given to Dr. Bob O’Driscoll and the staff of 4 South at the Corner Brook Long Term Care facility who cared for her during the last few years, and to her sister Marina Allen who spent many hours with her at the Home.
Doris is predeceased by her parents Alexander (Sandy) and Elizabeth Hynes and her brothers Merle and Max. Also, predeceasing her was the father of her children, William (Bill) Hicks and his parents, Leslie and Beatrice Hicks, her brothers-in-law, Ward Allen, Robert Green, Frank Kelly, Marcel Noel, and Dr. Doug Jenkins, Jim Loughlin and sisters-in-law Marian Henshaw and BJ Hynes.
She will be forever loved and missed by her children and their families – Pam Elliott (Rick), Paul (Sherry), Kathie, Wayne (Donna), Deanna Solo (Rick), Philip (Jackie) and Michelle Patrick (Chris). She has 8 grandchildren -Terri Humphries (Stephen), Bradford Elliott (Laura), Erica MacPherson (Tyler), Dr. Jasmine Elliott, Robyn Froude (Shawn), Jennifer Solo (Jeremy), Robert Hicks (Samantha), and Drew Patrick, and 4 greatgrandchildren (Charlotte and Chase Humphries, Declan Elliott and Sailor Pope).
Besides having her own large family, Doris was blessed to grow up in a large loving family and is survived by 5 sisters, Rona Noel, Marina Allen, Joan Green (Al), Alice Kelly, Audrey Kilpatrick (Keith) and 4 brothers Harvey (Betty), Gerald, Wayne and Donald (Joyce) and sister-in-law Diane Hynes. She was particularly close to her sister Joan Green who was also her best friend, living near each other as adults and sharing many aspects of life.
She is also survived by members of the Hicks family who was an important part of her life for many years, and they include Florence Loughlin, Derek Hicks (Marian), and Diane Frampton (Fred). She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews who affectionately called her Aunt Dory.
Cremation has taken place. There will be a visitation at the Country Haven Funeral Home on Thursday, June 16, 2022 from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM. The funeral service will take place on Friday, June 17, 2022 at 10:30 AM at Humber United Church on Clarence Street, where she sang in the choir over the years, with Rev. Jocelyn Cook officiating. Interment to follow at Mount Patricia Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Humber United Church on Clarence Street Corner Brook, in Doris’ memory.
