With heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of our wonderful mother and Nana, Doris “Doedy” Marjorie Carmichael-Carlson (nee Johnson) on March 8, 2022 at Portage General Hospital. Mom was surrounded by all of her children and their love as she left this world to meet her Heavenly Father.
Mom was pre-deceased by her parents Peter and Doris Johnson, father and mother-in-law James and Irene Carmichael, brother Alfred Johnson, brother-in-law Jim Fairburn, brother and sister-in-law Ron and Isabel Carmichael, brother-in-law William Thorpe and most importantly the first love of her life, Neil “Mike” Carmichael in 1994 and then the second love of her life, Henry Carlson in 2017.
Left to cherish her memory are her loving children Sandra (Foss) Garrioch, Doug (Barb) Carmichael and and Dawna (Rob) Leslie along with her grandchildren, brother and sisters, sister in laws, brother-in-law and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Mom was born in Winnipeg on February 25, 1932. The family farmed near Inwood, Sandridge and Narcisse, Mb. She attended Peguis, Hythe and Inwood Schools. Mom always said times were hard during the depression years but they always had good food, a nice home and lots of fun times together playing cards, games, dancing and singing. When she was sixteen, she had her first job at Pauline Chambers, then later at Barbara Ellis Envelope Factory, The Hudson’s Bay and A+W.
A blind date in 1956 changed Mom’s life forever as she met the love of her life Neil Carmichael marrying him on May 17, 1958. With Dad in the Air Force, the newlyweds embarked on their new life together with postings to Marville France, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Gimli and Portage la Prairie. The dream of having a family came true with the birth of Sandra in 1963, Doug in 1967 and Dawna in 1968.
Together in 1974, Mom and Dad built our first home at the Peony Farm. She often talked about how these times where the best of her life. Mom very much enjoyed her garden, canning and baking for her family along with playing guitar, the violin and accordion. The best thing in their retirement was becoming Nana and Papa. Mom loved being a Nana and made every visit and sleepover such a wonderful time for the kids. Upon dad’s passing in 1994, mom was devastated. So many friends and family supported her during this time and she was so appreciative of all of you.
After a few years, Mom met the second love of her life Henry Carlson and they got married on July 12, 1997. Mom and Henry enjoyed their twilight years together at the Windsor Park Estates where they met great friends and enjoyed many activities until Henry passed in 2017. Many people at the Windsor Park Estates and First Baptist Church rallied around Mom to support her these last five years. We are so thankful for the friendship, love, and support you gave to her.
She was such a comforting mom and always could take your worries away with her positive words of support. She had an amazing sense of humor and would enjoy talking to anyone she came across.
Heartfelt thanks go to the nurses, health care aids, therapists, Dr. Russell Price and Dr. Ross for the wonderful care you gave Mom and us during her hospitalization.
A Celebration of Mom’s life will be held May 17th, 2022 at 2:00 pm at the First Baptist Church 102 3rd St SE Portage la Prairie, MB. Private family interment will precede the service.
In lieu of flowers, if desired, memorial donations may be made to the Children’s Wish Foundation, a charity close to Mom’s heart.
