Loved by many, known by most, Donald “Flub” Saunders passed away after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer on Monday, May 2, 2022, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born April 28, 1940, in Sydney, he was the son of the late George and Margaret (Bryson) Saunders.
Donnie’s 82 years of life would fill a library with books if his adventures and mishaps were documented. It is these stories told by Flub, that we all loved so much and wondered if they were as true as he made them sound, only to find out that indeed they were. Known for his candidness, he did not mix words, nor was he afraid to express his opinions on matters close to his heart, including his on again off again love affair with his Toronto Blue Jays. If only you got a hold of Cito Gaston that day when you called the stadium, eh Flub?
Flub ran a successful corner store in Ashby for many years (Flub’s Dairy), which many locals cherished for the added entertainment value only Flub could provide. His biggest passion in life was his love affair with harness racing. Through the years, he drove, trained and cared for many horses, loving each animal like they were all world champions, including his beloved, Banks Abe, for whom he had a special attachment.
Donnie loved his family and is survived by his brothers, Carl and Fred, sisters, Bev and Hazel, along with many nieces and nephews. His friends will miss him terribly, but have solace knowing that his stories will continue, only to a bigger audience.
A special thanks goes to Margie Wall for watching over Donnie the last few years
In addition to his parents, Donnie was predeceased by his brothers, Bobby, Earl, Roy, Billy and Ralph and sisters, Shirley, Dorothy, Minnie, Francis and Evelyne.
Following Donnie’s wishes, there will be no funeral service.
