Obituary of Donald Percy Brightman
Age 86, of Halifax, passed away peacefully, Friday, February 11, 2022 in the Camp Hill Veterans Memorial Building, QEII, Halifax. Born on October 22, 1935 in Scotch Village, he was a son of the late Percy and Octavia (Dearman) Brightman.
Don served with the Canadian Armed Forces (REME) serving in Germany, Egypt and Canada. He trained as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic and worked on tanks. He retired from the military in 1975. He then worked 20 years with Video Industrial in Truro. After that he went on to do three years with Canadian Core of Commissionaires at the secure women’s prison in Truro and then to Shay Auto Sales in Sackville for six years. Don finished out his working career putting in three years at Atlantic Acura in Halifax until his final retirement at the age of 73.
Don is survived by his wife of 47 years, Pearlene McManus-Brightman; his pride and joy, daughter, Lyndsay Brightman-Kennedy (Ryan Kennedy); the loves of his life, granddaughters, Ryley and Brielle Brightman-Kennedy; brother, Bob (Sue); sisters, Frances, Helen, Judy and Velva. He is also survived by his children from his first marriage, sons, Donnie and Brian; daughter, Peggy and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his loving daughter, Sylvia Grace (1993); brothers, Palliser, Herman and Floyd; and sister, Marie.
The family would like to extend a thank you to the Veterans Memorial Building, Jubilee 6E. Special thank you is extended to Heather and Elsie who went above and beyond to be there for Don and his family. Dr. Evans, whose kindness will never be forgotten. Social Worker for fifth and sixth floor, Erin MacDonald, without you we never would have gotten through this, you are amazing. Finally, our utmost gratitude goes to Nurse Sarah, who in our absence while we made our way to the hospital, was at Don’s bedside holding his hand and comforting him while he took his last breath. We will forever be grateful to all of you.
Arrangements for cremation have been entrusted to DeMont Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 419 Albert Street, Windsor (902-798-8317). A private graveside service will be held in St. John the Evangelist Parish Cemetery, Wiley Ave. Windsor, Father John MacPherson will officiate.
