(December 22, 1941 – December 17, 2022)
On Saturday December 17, Butch lost his fight with pancreatic cancer. He died peacefully at home surrounded by family.
Butch is survived by Muriel Fearon Spence (Toosie), his wife of 58 years, as well as his children, Jeff of Vancouver, Deanne (Peter) Telford of Cavan, and Bill of Doon; grandchildren, Sam, Jonah, Mitchell and Katie; and brothers, Ted (Miriam), and Ken. He is predeceased by his brother Bob (Isabel), and parents Tommy and Edna Spence.
Butch was born and raised in Galt, Ontario. He attended Blair, Manchester, and Lincoln Avenue Public Schools, followed by high school at Galt Collegiate Institute. He worked at Mimik Ltd. for 29 years, and then Dana Canada, until he retired in 2002. He and Muriel retired to Goderich, Ontario, where they enjoyed summers by the lake and went south for winters in Cocoa, Florida.
Butch was an avid reader, a collector of stamps and coins, and he enjoyed a good pun. His knowledge of cars was extensive, and he restored his 1931 Ford Model A that still runs today. He loved to ride his bike everyday, and he loved spending time with his family. Family trips to the east and west coasts and Caribbean cruises leave wonderful memories.
It is his wish that a private family celebration take place when the weather is warm, the skies are blue, and the sun is shining. Undoubtedly, bicycles will be involved.
Don was very grateful for his medical team, and encourages you to donate to a hospital of your choice. We would like to acknowledge Kari Johnson RNP, Dr. Kittmer, Annerieke van Beets, Dr. Thomas, and the entire team of Care Partners whose concern and kindness will never be forgotten.
Muriel (Toosie) Spence and family.
