Donald’s Obituary
SMITH, Donald Allen – It is with heavy and broken hearts that the family of Donald Allen Smith, 83, announce his peaceful passing on February 21, 2022, at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Donnie was born June 14, 1938 in North East Point to Samuel and Julia (Ross) Smith. At the age of 15 Donnie moved to Bear Point to go lobstering with Captain Noble Sholds. He remained a successful fisherman, captaining many of his own vessels, until the age of 80 when his health started to decline. Donnie was a member of the Bear Point Advent Christian Church and Sunday School, where he served as a trustee and usher. Donnie was a sports enthusiast as both a spectator and a participant. He was an eager and champion participant in bowling, target shooting, hunting, etc. He was also known as “The Blueberry King” and the “Kindling Wood Man”. His greatest passion in life though was his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who affectionately called him Papa! Donnie is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Marie (Shand); his children, Dawn, Darrell (Michelle), Mark (Stephanie); his grandchildren, Deanna, Rickey, Chrissy, Jessica (Jeremy) Hallett, Danielle (Ty) Ross; his great-grandchildren, Sara, Brayden, Caden, Brettly, Jase, Brielle, Mackenzie, and Leightyn; also survived by brothers, Norman, Leonard; and sister, Madeline. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by several brothers, sisters, and in-laws. The family would like to take this time to express their sincere appreciation to the nurses of 3 South and 4 North and Dr. Tyler Green for their excellent care, concern, and compassion. There will be a visitation held from 2:30-4 pm and 6-8 pm, Wednesday, at the H. M. Huskilson’s Memorial Chapel, Barrington. The funeral service will take place on Thursday, February 24, at 2 pm at the Bear Point Advent Christian Church with Rev Alvin McComiskey officiating. Interment to follow in the Birch Hill Cemetery, Bear Point. Proof of double vaccination and the wearing of masks are mandatory at both visitation and service. The service will be recorded and added to the obituary on this site for those unable to attend. It has been requested there be family flowers only. Memorial donations in Donald’s name may be made to Bear Point Christian Advent Church or the Shelburne County Minor Hockey Association.
