Dermot’s Obituary
Peacefully passed away following a short illness, at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Hamilton, Ontario, Dermot Joseph St. Croix, formerly of St. Vincent’s, St. Mary’s Bay, aged 92 years.
Predeceased by his beloved wife of 26 years, Bessie, parents Aiden & Bridget St. Croix, sister Mildred and brothers: John, Lawrence, Peter, Philip, Gus and Aiden.
Survived by his many cherished family members, including sisters Helen (Stephenville, NL) and Mary (St. John’s, NL), sisters-in-law Edna and Geraldine (St. Vincent’s, NL) and many beloved nieces, nephews and other family, including his stepson Scott (Margaret) Gardiner and step-grandchildren Ben and Kyle (Calgary, AB).
Born in Newfoundland, Dermot moved to Hamilton in 1951. He was a dedicated employee at Dofasco for 36 years. He was very proud of his Newfoundland roots and kept in close touch with family “back home”. He was a voracious reader, preferring books about history and politics, while always enjoying a friendly debate on current events. He was an avid gardener growing the “best tomatoes in Hamilton” in the backyard of his Broker Driver home. Fondly referred to as a real character due to his fun-loving sense of humour which brought a smile to all those around him.
Dermot was a devout Catholic with a deep love of his faith. He was a longtime and faithful parishioner who attended Mass every week, as he was able, even in later years.
Many thanks to Fr. Arpee and staff of St. Margaret Mary Church for their kindness, guidance and help. Thank you to the Rodziewicz family (Edmonton, AB) for their loving support and for offering special Mass of intentions for Dermot at St. Matthews Parish in Edmonton.
Sincere thanks to his many dear friends; especially: Jim, Ruth and David, his church community and neighbours and staff at El Mirador Apartments for their friendship, support, and generosity. Also a special thank you to the staff at St. Joseph’s Hospital – CTU Central for their tender and attentive care.
