Derek Woodhead Tuesday March 8 2022

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Derek Woodhead on Tuesday, March 8, 2022. Derek is survived by his loving wife of 18 years, Maureen, his son Chris (Michelle), daughter Sue (Chris), and daughter Deri (Dustin). He is predeceased by his wife Marion and son, Philip. He will be greatly missed by his stepdaughters Lori, Jennifer (Leonard) and Leslie (Shawn). He was blessed with nine grandchildren: Brandon (Sarah), Matthew (Joanna), Tanner (Shelby), Daniel, Wade (Amy), Raine, Jordyn, Emily, and Kalea, as well as five step-grandchildren: Leah (Max), Evan, Courtney, Cameron (Brittany), and Amber (Gerrit). He leaves behind six great- grandchildren: Forest, River, Atlas, Walter, Rhett, and Benjamin. Derek approached life with gratitude, positivity and joy. He made it his objective to never stop learning, and to find meaning and value in everything he did. Whether simple or challenging, he’d be sure to pinpoint the lesson and the elation in completing each task. Art sparked Derek’s interest at a young age, which quickly unfolded his natural attention to detail and gifted talent for fine art painting. He let his passion for art guide his career and became a ‘Fine Colour Printer’, a title he fondly referred to decades later. He spent many hours in the ‘hobby shop’ working with wood, making sure every corner was perfectly square, and every angle precise regardless of the creation. During his retirement, he practiced the art of woodcarving, consistently building his skill and always having a new project on the go. Art was more than a hobby for Derek, it was how he viewed life; as if every day, person and challenge could be viewed as an opportunity to acknowledge the beauty that was present, if only you took the time to capture it. Derek lived on Balsam Lake for many years and knew it like the back of his hand. He spent many weekends piloting his pontoon boat to a favourite cove on the island, that his family had affectionately named “Three Stick”. He was a tireless gardener and meticulous weed puller. He savoured every meal and always cleaned his plate of every crumb. He often declined dessert, saying it interrupted the prolonged enjoyment of the main meal. No matter the occasion, he always looked dapper with a fresh shave, a pressed shirt, and shiny shoes. He loved to dance and was always the most popular one on the dancefloor, and was often at the mic on karaoke night, singing Frank Sinatra’s “My Way”. In his later years, he travelled to many places across the world with his beloved wife Maureen, including a trip to Bolton, England, the town where he was born. Unless he was having a serious conversation, Derek always had a big smile on his face. His brilliant blue eyes shone radiantly out of his weathered face, and the wisdom behind them shone just as evident. He had a kind word for everyone he met and gave generously of his time and talents. His heart was strong, both physically and emotionally. He loved with his whole being, and in abundance; he was a ‘lovebird’. The passing of Derek has left an enormous void in the lives of his family and friends, that will be impossible to fill. After a long day, Derek would often go to bed and remind himself, “I’ve had a good day. Now, it is time to rest.” After 88 years and admittedly no regrets, all who loved him want to say thank you for enriching our lives with your presence and remind you that, you’ve had a good life. Now, it is time to rest. Derek’s family kindly asks that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Storybook Farm Primate Sanctuary, your local Humane Society, or simply do something kind for someone today.
