Dennis Vaughan Thompson Wednesday April 13th 2022

Dennis Vaughan Thompson
July 7th, 1933 – April 13th, 2022
Dennis Thompson died on Wednesday, April 13th, 2022 in Port Hope, Ontario. Living with the increasing stress of Parkinson’s, he succumbed to the rapid onset of pneumonia. Born in Bristol, England, Dennis became a master bookbinder. After immigrating to Canada in 1977, he worked at Smiths Falls Bookbinding before setting up his own business. His accomplishments extended to restoring government archival volumes, as well as repairing and binding countless family Bibles and other treasured books for clients in Hastings County. When Dennis married Dorothy (Gaebel) Empey in September, 1977, he embraced the rural Canadian way of life. He and Dorothy presented a loving model of married life and community involvement to their family both in Canada and England. Blessed with a clear tenor voice, Dennis enjoyed many years singing with the Madoc Men’s Choir. He sang solo pieces for innumerable weddings, funerals, and community events. Gardening, golfing, and maple syrup making at the Empeco farm presented new challenges which he tackled with his uniquely easy going enthusiasm. Bereft by Dorothy’s death in 2002, Dennis carried on at the Empey Family Farm until 2012. Choosing to be closer to his step daughter Nancy Thomas and her husband Frederick, Dennis moved into Regency Manor Retirement Home in Port Hope. As long as his health permitted, he sang in the Port Hope United Church choir, loved being a member of the local Lawn Bowling Club, and participated wholeheartedly in his residence activities. Dennis will be lovingly remembered by his daughter Julia (Bill O’Neill) and grandsons Westleigh and Lynden, all of Bristol, England, his step daughter Nancy (Frederick Thomas), and stepson Richard Empey. Grandpa Dennis will be greatly missed by his step-grandchildren Meghan Thomas (Julio Delgado), Dana Thomas (Marshall Abecassis), Jason Empey (Heather Grundy), Michael Empey (Kristy), and Jeffrey Empey, as well as great-grandsons Austin Empey and Reuben Abecassis. Due to Covid-19 concerns, funeral arrangements are private, immediate family only. Any Memorial donations may be directed to Trinity United Church, Madoc, or the Salvation Army.
