Obituary
We are saddened to announce that Dennis McKinney formerly of Viking, Alberta, passed away on November 7 in Comox, British Columbia at the age of 85 with family by his side.
Dennis is survived by his wife of 64 years Catherine, his son David (Karen), daughter Debbie (Barry), son Glenn and daughter Wanda (Neil), 4 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren, sister Marilyn and many nieces and nephews.
Born in Viking, Alberta, Dennis was a very skilled, hardworking man who was very proud and loved his family dearly.
Dennis joined the RCAF in March 0f 1957 and took basic training in St. Jean, Quebec. While at basic training Dennis was selected for Air Force Police Training. His many postings included Comox, B.C. Cold Lake, Alberta, Dana, Saskatchewan, Val d” Or, Quebec, Ottawa, Ont., Lahr, Germany, Edmonton, Alberta and Sardis, British Columbia. Dennis served 20 years in the Armed Forces.
Dennis began his second career with the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia in 1977. Dennis spent 21 years as and Adjuster/Manager and retired for a second time in 1998.
Dennis was an avid fisherman who loved being out on the water. His love for the sport took him on many fishing adventures with friends and family. He sure knew how to can salmon and set crab traps over the years and was proud to share his knowledge with others. An avid card player, his favourite games included Wizard and many different poker games. He was never shy to take your money from you. Upon retirement he was given a set of golf clubs from his children to take up the sport of golf. He gave those clubs a good workout right to the end!!
Dennis always had his garage door “open for business” and would help anybody out. In his garage he made many burl clocks, candle holders, spoon stands and steak turners. He was a fine craftsman who gave to others and enjoyed seeing them proudly displayed.
Dennis spent his retirement winters with his wife in Arizona where he met many lifelong friends who taught him the art of relaxation when he was not busy laying flooring, skirting trailers and helping others with anything they needed. He loved the colours of the desert and the sand dunes, a cool beer on a hot day and a good shot of rye.
Dennis was predeceased by his parents Harry and Mary, his brothers Gerald, Stuart and Neil.
The family wishes to extend their thanks to the staff at the Comox hospital and the Cancer Unit who gave dad such special care.
At Dennis’s request there will be no service.
