It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of David Maxwell Broughton on August 13, 2022. David was born in Toronto to Maxwell Broughton and Ruth (Higgins) Broughton. He was an inquisitive child whose quest for knowledge continued throughout his life. He was a lover of nature, an avid bird watcher and bird bander at the Bird Observatory on Toronto Island. He loved competing, watching and playing chess. He was a traveller, a lover of music and an appreciator of fine wine. David was a member of the Scarborough Chess Club, the Toronto Ornithological Club, Past President of the Historical Lighting Society of Canada, Member of the Rushlight Club and the Ephemera Society of America. He was also the owner of Sirlampsalot Publications. He was instrumental in establishing the chess league, the bird observatory, the analytical software group, the Port Hope ratepayers and our condo board. David was employed for 30 years at Ontario Hydro then Hydro One before retiring as a Senior Advisor in Corporate Human Resources in 2000. He is survived by Mary Jane his wife of 47 years, his siblings, Barbara Martin and Joanne Ennamorato of Newmarket and Brian and Paul of Toronto. He is also Uncle Dave to his many nieces and nephews. Lucy and Penny were his faithful companions throughout retirement and Penny will miss her long daily walks.
Guided by his vision, his much anticipated garden will be completed to be enjoyed by his family and friends in the years to come. The service for family and friends will take place at Cobourg Union Cemetery on Friday August 19th at 11:00 am. Should you wish, a donation may be made in David’s name to the Northumberland Humane Society, The Friends of Wesleyville Village, Northumberland Land Trust or a charity of your choice.
