David “Leslie” Underhill
March 7, 1946 – September 12, 2022
Our dad was diagnosed with Stage 4 stomach cancer on July 20, 2022. After a short but hard-fought battle, he gained his angel wings on September 12, 2022, surrounded by family.
There was way more to dad than his diagnosis. Most importantly, he was a husband, dad, grandad, son, brother, uncle, and friend. A role he took seriously as he loved us all with his entire being.
Dad was born on March 7, 1946, the 11th child to the late Herman and Hazel (Astle) Underhill of Barnettville. Born and raised on the Miramichi, he stayed there his entire life with his wife of 54 years Launda (Curtis) Underhill. Together they raised three special children. Tabitha Duffy of Riverview NB, Tammy Giles (Brad) of Red Deer AB and Timothy Underhill (Angela) of Riverview NB. When the kids grew up and left home dad was blessed with his next greatest blessings, his grandchildren: Brandon, Alyssa, Brooke, Darian, Chad, Dalton, Curtis, Owen, Valerie, Travis, and Jeremy along with great-grandchildren Logan and baby Steeves.
In addition to this wife and kids, Dad was survived by his siblings Margie (Doug), Shirley (Sally), Vera (Eldon), Lorraine (late Howard), Mildred (late Jay), Sandra (Lionel), Clarence (Darlene) and Daryl (Ellen) as well as his father-in-law Reginald Curtis and in-laws Ruthie (John), Karsten (Ruth), Darwin (Shirley) and Charlene (Don).
Dad was predeceased by his parents, his mother-in-law Willa, and siblings Marie (LeRoy), Eva, Herman (Dorothy) and Reg (Jennie).
Dad loved and embraced life. He had the best smile and the most infectious laugh. He was a millwright and a machinist and was proud of both of his occupations. He was very respected by his coworkers and supervisors. When he wasn’t working or spending time with family you could always find him on the river fishing, doing puzzles, woodworking, gardening, or on the trails skidooing, snowshoeing, or skiing. He also loved to spend time at his “2nd Home” in Moncton at Campers City. Dad loved everything curling. His favourite place was the curling rink throwing rocks or at the Brier sporting his infamous Brier hat.
In his younger years, he volunteered with the Saint John Ambulance, was president of the Rec Council and was an active member of the reunion committee.
As per Dad’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral and internment will take place at a later date.
We, the family, would like to thank both Father Gerry and Father Chris for the many prayers and visits. We would also like to thank the nursing staff on 3 East at the Miramichi Hospital as well as the units 5600 and 4200 at the Moncton City Hospital. We would especially like to thank Dr. McNally, Dr. O’Brien and all the staff at Maison Albert House for dad’s care and the support and compassion they showed us. We created many memories and had many laughs over the past couple of weeks that will last a lifetime.
