David George Legge
September 1, 1945-March 29, 2022
It is with heavy hearts that we share the recent passing of our dear father, David Legge. He was a man who was blessed with immeasurable gifts. None was greater than the love that he and ourmother, Marjorie shared for more than 58 years. Their love story started in 1964, at a dance inthe New Perlican Legion where a shy lad from Heart’s Content made the acquaintance of a young Winterton beauty. She stole his heart on that first encounter and from then forward would be forever connected by the heart. They married on June 26, 1967, and their journey through life together commenced. This young couple soon became parents of twin boys, David & Darrin. A year later, they happily welcomed a daughter, Kelly and in another 18 months, they were blessed with a second daughter, Tracey.
Dad was a hardworking man, always modest and never wanting attention or praise. He pretty much could turn his hand to anything and oftentimes we called him the“ Jack of all Trades”.
Dad was a die-hard Montreal Canadien fan. This often resulted in some fun but tense hockey banter with family members who supported the opposing team. We are grateful that his team gave him one final win on March 26th.
He took great pride in working as a cook with Marine Atlantic for 33 years. Dad could put up a meal like no other especially a turkey dinner with the best gravy. In order to provide a living for his family, his career took him away from home every 2 weeks. He took comfort in knowing that he had a strong, devoted partner in our mother, Marjorie and that she could keep things going while he was away. We still can’t fully understand how difficult it must have been for him to be separated from his family especially during special occasions.
During his career with Marine Atlantic, he forged lifelong friendships with shipmates. These many friendships carried long beyond his retirement. Whenever Dad encountered a former shipmate, he loved to reminisce about the countless trips to the Labrador coast and the Gulf of St. Lawrence – Port Aux Basque & Argentia runs.
Following Dad’s retirement in 1998, he settled very easily into life in his beloved hometown of Heart’s Content. He was active in his community and church. He acquired a passion for gardening and woodworking. He transformed a garden of rocks in his backyard into a floral haven and created some wood pieces that will be cherished for years to come. Although, the greatest blessing in his retirement was the quality time he spent with his precious grandchildren who he dearly loved. They brought a joy to Dad’s life that only a grandparent can fully understand.
Although, we are saddened by Dad’s passing, we are comforted to know that he lived a very full life and he leaves behind a legacy of love that will carry into the generations to follow.
He is predeceased by his precious mother and father (Mabel and Marcus Legge), mother and father-in-law (Winnifred and Chesley Green), Uncle Ray Legge, Uncle Herb George, sister-in-law (Bernice Green) and special cousin Rosa Chaytor.
He is survived by his loving wife & soul mate, Marjorie Legge (nee Green). He also leaves behind 4 precious children and spouses; David (Kim) Legge, Darrin (Jennifer) Legge, Kelly(Kenny) Pike and Tracey (Michael) Burton. He will be affectionately remembered by his 10 grandchildren; Nicholas, Hayley, Ashley, Jeremy, Hannah, Laura, Vanessa, Ethan, Abby & Kiera.
He was a treasured brother to Edwin (June) Legge, Lena (Harold) Snow, Gerald (Ruby) Legge, Johnny (Doris) Legge and Donna (Norman) Coates. He will be forever missed by his brothers-in-law William (Yvonne) Green and George (Karen) Green and Gary Green. He will also be missed dearly by his sister-in law Shirley (Millie) Hiscock. He is also remembered fondly by Aunt Jean George.
Dad also leaves behind a large number of wonderful nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and former Marine Atlantic shipmates.
We want to express our sincere thanks to the excellent nursing staff at the Health Science Centre (4 South A) and to his family physician Dr. Phillip Holloway who provided exceptional care.
A celebration of his life will occur on Sunday, April. 3 at 2:00pm at St. Mary’s Anglican Church in Heart’s Content. The Legge family will also be accepting visitors on Saturday, April 2 at 1-5 pm and 7:00-9:00 pm at the Green’s Funeral Home in Winterton.
Donations in Dad’s memory can be made to the St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Heart’s Content.
Mask will be required to minimize the transmission of COVID-19.
