It is with great sadness that the family of David Peter Carkner announce his passing at the age of 75 at his home in Sherwood Park, Alberta.
Dave came into this world August 7, 1946 in Cumberland, Ontario to Eileen and Burton (Burt) Carkner. They moved to England where he spent most of his childhood and teen years with his older brother Adrian and younger brother Ian.
Dave moved back to Canada at the age of 18 and completed his culinary apprenticeship in Ontario, where he met his future wife, Janice. They came out West to Alberta and, after a short time in Jasper, they eventually settled and raised their family at their home in Sherwood Park.
Chef Dave, as he is more commonly known, spent several years honing his craft in many kitchens throughout Alberta before taking on his defining role as the Chef at the OLPH Parish catering facility. Dave became a friend and mentor to the many volunteers, parishioners, and patrons throughout the 25 years he spent at OLPH Parish. Chef Dave has taught and inspired many over the years with his gentle and charismatic nature. It is widely debated whether his smile and kind words have warmed more hearts than his garlic mashed potatoes have satisfied empty bellies.
He is predeceased by his mother, Eileen (nee Corbett) and father, Burton Carkner.
Dave is survived by his wife, Jan; their 5 children, Pam (Francis), Paul (Tammy), David (Nadine), Lori (Greg), and Jen (Rick).
An award-winning Chef, ice carver, friend, husband and father, Dave was most proud of his many grandchildren (all 14 of them); Damon, Kyle, Tyler, Morgan, Hayden, Tianna, Kayln, Isaac, Avery, Sophie, Rozlyn, Cooper, Anna, and Oliver.
When he wasn’t preparing a meal for his family or for hundreds of people, Dave would be found on the ball diamonds and soccer fields watching his children and grandchildren play.
Dave was a special soul, beautiful friend, loving husband, wonderful father, and proud grandfather. He will be forever in our hearts.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., on Thursday, June 30, 2022 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 13 Brower Drive, Sherwood Park, Alberta.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or any charity of your choosing.
