David Brian Hatfield
With sadness, we announce the death of David Brian Hatfield on September 8, 2022 in the Yarmouth Regional Hospital. He was 71. David was the only child of the late Eileen N. (Coltman) and Hubert M. “Toots” Hatfield. David grew up in Yarmouth, worked for his father in the legendary store, and graduated from YCMHS. Soon after graduation he struck out for an extended trip to Europe, which included a spell on an Israeli kibbutz.
Most of his adult life was spent in Atikokan, a town north of Thunder Bay, where he worked for the Departments of Environment and Transportation. His long-time passion was raising tropical fish. He was also keenly interested in geology, archeology, geography, and things British. He inherited his mother’s love of gardening and was especially fond of varieties of irises. This past summer, he was in the midst of plans to enhance the garden started by his mother.
David had returned to Nova Scotia about five years ago to look after his widowed mother. He was devoted to Eileen and he did not miss a single day visiting her and the residents at Roseway, Nakile and finally, at The Meadows.
His return to Nova Scotia “from away” meant connecting with cousins and a few old friends, especially the late Rick Doucette. On weekday mornings, he could usually be found at the Perky Owl and on Saturdays at the Farmers’ Market cafe. We would especially like to acknowledge the exceptional kindness and friendship extended to David and Eileen for many years by their neighbour, Denny Morrow.
The Hatfield family loved animals and they raised many dogs, cats, tropical fish, and catered to an abundance of happily-fed strays in the neighbourhood. Donations to these NS animal welfare organizations would be welcome: Hope for Wildlife, Friends of Trap, Neuter, Release (TNR) and Snap-nosis and Friends (donations to Parade Street Vets for veterinary bills). A graveside service is being planned for Yarmouth Mountain Cemetery in the near future.
