Obituary
Smith, Darlene Ann July 8, 1943 – March 7, 2022 aged 78 years
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of a loving mother and grandmother. Darlene Anne Smith, age 78, passed away peacefully Monday evening, March 7th, 2022, at the Regina General Hospital.
Darlene was born July 8th, 1943 in Shaunavon, SK, a daughter of the late Samuel and Stella Smith. As a young girl, she enjoyed the ranching lifestyle introduced to her by her father and her uncle. Darlene loved spending her time outside with all the horses on her uncles ranch. It was during these early years that her love of horses and all animals truly blossomed and proceeded to follow her throughout her life.
Growing up, Darlene attended school in Eastend, SK, and later became an active member within the Roman Catholic Church. Life’s travels eventually brought her to Picture Butte, Alberta, where she was working as a waitress and she met the love of her life, Bill Smith. Darlene and Bill later moved together to Calgary, Alberta and were united in holy matrimony on May 11th, 1967. Together they had two sons, David, born in 1964, and Bruce, born in 1967. Darlene worked as an administrator in the St. Paul’s school in Calgary while raising her young boys.
In 1977, Darlene and Bill bought a farm in Stenen, SK, where they ran a cattle and grain operation. In addition to being a homemaker, Darlene also worked at the Norquay Senior Home as a nurse’s aid. Living once again on a farm, Darlene spoiled her two horses with pies and cookies, often directly through the kitchen window or front door. She always enjoyed helping her future grandchildren gift the occasionally cookie or piece of toast to the horses whenever they came to visit.
In 2000, Darlene and her husband retired to town living in Canora, SK, where they spent their days watching cowboy shows and enjoying the company of their children, grandchildren, friends and pets. Darlene was preceded in death by her husband of 82 years. She is survived by her younger sister Rhonda Merritt, her sons David and Bruce Smith, her grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Darlene will be greatly missed and forever remembered by those close to her.
Graveside service will be held on Friday, March 11, 2022 at 3:00 p.pm from Canora Cemetery, Canora, Saskatchewan with Karry-Ann Nunn celebrating. Donations in memory of Darlene may be made to Canadian Cancer Foundation. To leave a note of condolence for the family please visit wolkowski.ca
