JOHN WILLIAM MOORE
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear father, grandfather and great grandfather, John Moore. John passed away peacefully on Monday, January 17, 2022 with his dear friend Rita Leyden at his side holding his hand. John was predeceased by his wife Anne in 2013 and will be lovingly remembered by his four children Geoff (Nancy), Tracy (Chas), Nancy, Pam (Steve); grandchildren Crystal, Suzanne, Kate, Neal, Megan, Erin and great grandchildren Charlene, Jayden, Kaylin, Aliyah, Lennox and Walker.
John was born in Winnipeg on July 11, 1926 and was one of four rambunctious boys. Money was very tight and the boys grew up scavenging for coal, fresh produce and bread. They were hard working kids who knew the value of a dollar and were not afraid of getting their hands dirty. John developed a love of sports at an early age and excelled at many sports throughout his life including hockey, baseball, curling and golf. As good an athlete as he was, Anne always gave him a run for his money!
John and Anne were married in 1952 and started their family soon after. When the children were young, the family moved to Toronto so that Dad could pursue business interests. They made many great and lasting friendships, some of which have continued to this very day.
The family returned to Winnipeg in 1969 and Dad opened the business forms company, Associated Business Systems, shortly thereafter. Our Dad created a successful business with our Mom’s help and they were able to enjoy the fruits of their labour. They spent many happy winters in Maui, Hawaii and loved vacations in Kelowna with Pam, Steve, Megan and Erin, touring wineries and playing golf.
Dad was involved in many organizations and clubs throughout his life. He was a long-time member and past President of the Winnipeg Business Club, the Masonic Order, the Wildewood Club and the Westminister United Church to name of few.
Dad had a big personality and didn’t hesitate to speak his mind. He was outgoing, loved a good party (preferably when red wine was on offer) and made sure that there was lots of good food and wine for the annual Moore Christmas Party. These events were always lots of fun and discussed at length by friends and family after the fact.
John moved to Dakota House several years ago and was determined to maintain his independence. Over time, this goal became harder to achieve until Thomas Oladele, Home Care Worker extraordinaire came into his life. Dad really looked forward to Thomas’s visits and often shared the conversations they’d had with us. According to Dad, the world would be a much better place if Thomas ran things. We are deeply grateful to Thomas for being so wonderful and for caring for our dad with such respect and compassion.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Westminister United Church or, the Manitoba Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Neil Bardal Funeral Centre is responsible for the arrangements and all are welcome to sign the on-line book of condolences at www.neilbardalinc.com. A service and reception to honour John will be held in the spring of 2022.
