Obituary
We are deeply saddened to announce that after a brief and courageous battle with cancer, Curtis Lazar passed away on his 57th birthday: October 1, 2022 in Fernie, BC.
Curtis is survived by his spouse, Joanne Boon; his daughters Zoe and Helen Lazar; his mother, Judy Lazar (Roger Larochelle); his father, Michael Lazar (Gaylene Lazar and son Tyler Lazar); and his brother, Jason Lazar (Nicole Lazar and sons Gavin and Desmond).
Curtis was born in the tiny community of Fisher Branch, Manitoba and after several moves, spent the rest of his childhood in Sherwood Park, Alberta. Curtis began a career based in the outdoors when he obtained work as an initial attack firefighter during summers, and as a snowmaker at the Canmore Nordic Centre through the winters. During the summer of 1991, while firefighting in the Highwood District of Kananaskis Country, he met his common-law spouse Joanne who was working as a park ranger. The two remained in Canmore until Curtis returned to school in 1994 for his forest technician diploma and in 1996, he graduated from the College of the Rockies, Castlegar. Curtis and Joanne then relocated to Fernie to pursue his forestry career with Crestbrook Forest Industries (later known as Tembec). After the birth of his two daughters; Zoe in 2002 and Helen in 2005, Curtis returned to school to become an electrician. He completed his apprenticeship with Teck and became a fulltime employee at Fording River in 2010.
Curtis loved to spend his time outdoors, and enjoyed biking, hiking, swimming, skiing, and snowboarding. He was an avid reader and spent many hours reading books on philosophy, spirituality, and science fiction. A lifelong aficionado of music, Curtis’s tastes ran from instrumental music all the way to heavy metal. He enjoyed discovering new and upcoming musicians and following their musical development. Curtis’s greatest achievement was as a father to his daughters, and taking the family camping, hiking, and on trips near and far gave him great joy. He also enjoyed his work as electrician and the challenges it presented, as well as the people he worked with.
Curtis will be remembered for his kindness, compassion, and his strong sense of integrity. He was greatly loved by all who came to know him, and he will forever be missed.
The Lazar family would like to thank Dr Bakker, and the nurses and caregivers who cared for him in his final days.
