Crossfield Mindy Kour nee Sengara December 7 1937 November 28 2022

We are heartbroken to share the sad news of Mindy’s passing on November 28th, surrounded by the love of her family. With strength and grace Mindy defied the odds and lived with complicated lymphoma for 12 precious years which she filled with love, laughter, and making memories.
Pre-deceased by her loving husband, Frank (d.1986), four brothers and one sister, Mindy leaves an unbelievable hole in the hearts of her children, Lisa and Harold, son-in-law, Rob, and the greatest joys of her life, her grandchildren, Claudia, Wyatt and Terra. Also mourning her passing are her siblings, Karnil (Lois), Sonny (Ange), Harry (Penny), Jeto and Dolly, and her close in-law family. She was a favourite Aunt to many nieces, nephews and their children both in Canada and in England.
Mindy was born at Vancouver General Hospital, the 7th of 11 children of Nargen and Daljeet Sengara, and was proud to be raised on Mitchell Island. She was determined and driven from the start and excelled at sports, student government, and creating a large social circle. Her sense of adventure took her on exciting travels beginning in her 20s right up to her last flight in October. She met Frank in 1962 when they both worked at Shaughnessy Hospital. Together, they built a life around a business and focused on their family, hard work, and creating special times.
Mum had several happy places including the garden she tended for over 45 years, the golf course with her friends, Maui with Dolly, and Canucks games with her grandchildren, but she was never happier than when her house was filled with family and friends. A natural hostess she loved creating occasions to bring people together and always welcomed Lisa and Harold’s friends with whom she made close ties. That warmth continued with her grandchildren and their friends in her backyard. She was our biggest supporter – equal parts practical and a dreamer. Her never-ending belief in us allowed us to believe in ourselves. Her pride in her grandchildren overflowed and she was ever enthusiastic watching them compete, hearing their adventures, sharing 4 o’clock tea time, and being their soft landing.
Above all else, Mindy loved generously. Her genuine interest in people left them feeling seen and heard. Her youthful energy endeared her to all, and her openness and compassion fostered strong relationships. She’d seen it all and nothing fazed her. Her sparkling eyes, beaming smile, and contagious laugh made her presence felt in every situation. With an open heart she connected with people of all ages and was a treasured and long-time friend to many. Mindy was always the source for a new restaurant or bakery, a good tailor, a delicious cocktail or the best place to buy plants. Businesses in every corner of the city knew Mindy.
We could never have had enough time with her, and the end came too quickly, but she filled us with strength and love to last our lifetimes. She will be forever missed, and we will continue to be inspired by her example to lead a life full of possibility, kindness, optimism, and joy. We take comfort in the thought that she is dancing with Dad again.
From the bottom of our hearts, we would like to thank Merly Santillan who has been a part of our family for almost 35 years. Her love and care for Mum was exceptional and we couldn’t imagine our lives without her.
Lastly, a special thank you to Dr. Kerry Savage who always saw the person behind the patient, connected closely with Mum, and gave us precious years together that we did not waste.
A Celebration and Remembrance of Mindy’s vibrant life will be held on Saturday, January 21st at 2pm at Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club, 4300 SW Marine Drive. All are welcome.
Donations may be made to the BC Cancer Foundation – Centre for Lymphoid Cancer. Or call up a friend for lunch, throw on a bright scarf, enjoy a walk by the water, share a good laugh, hug long and tight, and make someone feel special. That is what Mindy would want.
