Our dear Mom passed away peacefully at the grand old age of 99 after a full and contented life.
Mabel was the loving and proud matriarch of her far-flung clan, known as Mom to Carol Ann (Lorne), Donna Mae (Lance), Bradley (Nicole), Sandi (Stephen) and Kathryn (Stephen), Gram to Kevin, Craig, Kent, Erica, Alexandra, Rebecca, Philip, Ariana, Quinn and Cole, and Great-Grammie to Thalia, Rhys, Nolan, Keira, Hayden, Adeline, Harrison, Ellie and Arthur.
Mabel grew up on a farm near Linwood, Ontario, where, at age 8, she had the mind-boggling experience of having her appendix removed on the kitchen table.
Married to the late Arthur Cooper, her beloved husband of 73 years, our parents moved to Quebec in 1942 to begin their life together.
Mabel devoted her life to raising her family with unconditional love, patience, and boundless energy which she applied to caring for us all.
Our Mom was so many things to each of us but we can all agree that she was a star baker of the best ever chocolate chip cookies which were consumed with relish by all the generations.
Mabel was an avid reader, green thumb gardener and Word Search champ.
Throughout her life Mom expressed her creativity and enriched our lives through sewing, needlecraft, knitting (thanks to her we were never without Phentex slippers or woolen mittens!), painting, and arts & crafts. She had a keen eye for colour and design which was reflected in the home she decorated so beautifully.
Mabel was a newshound and was often the first to share breaking world events with us. In addition, our Mom diligently served as the “party line” operator for all family news, no detail of which she ever deemed too trivial to receive or pass along.
Mom’s graciousness, benevolence, stoicism and deep abiding love for us define our memories of her and will forever warm our hearts. We will cherish her always.
A graveside service in her honour took place on Monday, August 1, 2022.
Mabel’s family would like to extend their grateful thanks to the Cambridge Care Floor where she made her home, to Dr. Hani Bsalious for his home visits, to NOVA West Island and the CLSC Palliative Care Home Team’s kind intervention and the extraordinary care provided by the Teresa Dellar Palliative Care Residence.
