Condo Anthony Sarto
January 3, 1930 – July 11, 2022

Sarto Condo John Anthony –
It is with deep, heartfelt sadness we announce Condo passed peacefully on July 11, 2022, at home. Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Anthony and Anna (Scarenzi) born in Italy. He was predeceased this past June by his wife of 60 years Elizabeth (Betty). He will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by daughters Anna Marie (Ken MacKay); Sandy; and grandson, Anthony Sarto Morrison. He is survived by his brother Nobile; sisters and brothers-in-law Sally Watts, Dorothy (Mono) Baggio and Jimmy MacLean and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his siblings: Margaret, Ester, Bruna (Gillis) and Dino.
Condo was a proud graduate of St. FX University in 1955 with a Bachelor of Education degree and a graduate of St. Mary’s University in 1976 with an MA of Education. Condo had a career as a teacher and Principal for over 35 years within the Dartmouth District School Board. Over the span of his extensive career as an educator, he was grateful for the wonderful support provided by the students, parents, and staff. It was an honour for him to work to support all students to be the best they could be emulating his belief that a person treats all others with respect, and you will receive respect.
Condo was a man of strong Catholic faith. Condo was an active member in the Saint John XXII Parish and was a founding committee member. He belonged to the Knights of Columbus 4th Degree and served on various committees through his membership at Saint John XXII Parish. In the later years, he and Betty would attend mass a few times a week sitting in the side pew row of the church.
As a keen community participant along with his genuine interest in people, Condo entered municipal politics serving for 16 years (1979-1996) as Dartmouth Councillor for Ward 1/District 7 (Woodlawn area). For the following 9 years, (1996-2005) Condo became a member of the Halifax Regional Municipality Council during amalgamation and retired in 2005. During his time on Council, he invested wholehearted energy and commitment supporting the community and the district constituents of the City of Dartmouth, and later the Halifax Regional Municipality. Condo was humbled and grateful to the residents for their political support during his tenure and he was honored to be a municipal councillor and Deputy Mayor. He served to the best of his ability to meet the needs of his residents and worked together to problem solve and improve the district.
Over the years, Condo served on various committees including on the Dartmouth Non-profit Housing Committee for 25 years. He received the Rotary International Paul Harris Award; the Diamond Jubilee Award; he was honored to have the community park at Mount Edward Elementary School named on his behalf as he held the principalship for 18 years and he was delighted to have a street named Sarto Drive that is located in Woodlawn.
Throughout his well lived life, Condo was a tremendously hard worker, thoughtful, and caring individual whose family and friends mattered very deeply to him. We will cherish our memories and he will live forever in the hearts of his daughters and best friend, Anthony, with whom he had a one-of-a-kind relationship along with his faithful companions Casey and Finnegan.
We would like to extend gratitude and thanks to Dr. Wallace Tien, Dr. Adeniji (Domi), the doctors and nursing staff of the Dartmouth General Hospital 4th floor, NS Palliative Care, NS Continuing Care (Wendy Wierstra), Northwood Home Care and VON for their tremendous support and care over the past few months. Donations may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, Canadian Cancer Society, or a charity of your choice.
There will be no visitation and a private family service will be held.

  1. My sincerest sympathies to the family and friends of Mr Sarto, he did live a full, rich life and one day he instilled in me the valuable lesson of don’t break the rules for which I am very grateful for 50 years later. One winter day a snowball fight broke out and I accidentally hit him in the head with one and me a few others were rounded up to the principals office and the strap ( hand smacked with a piece of wood or leather, it was so long ago….ha, ha ). The way he did this was fair and I knew it was just. At the time I was so scared and am sure I was crying but I got over it and have always respected Mr Sarto for setting this example and the way he led his life. God Bless him. Thomas P. Forbes

  2. Sandy I never met your father . Reading his obituary I realize I have missed knowing a truly wonderful man! But as your friend( your Newfoundland friend), I have heard you speak lovingly of him and have a sense of knowing him. I offer my thoughts of care and condolence to you, your sister and to Anthony, your father’s “ best friend “.
