Obituary
It is with great sadness that the family of Clare Cooney announce his passing on December 16, 2022 at the age of 85. Clare is survived by his wife of 61 years Carole – his eldest son Dale (April) and their children Emily and Kaylyn and his youngest son Kirby and his children Taylor and Casey. He will also be missed by his brothers Gerry and Doug Cooney and his sisters Bev Knezacek and Marion Lee, brother-in-law Ross Oliphant (Linda) and sister-in-law Karen Elson (Ron) and numerous nieces and nephews.
Clare was born in Elrose, Saskatchewan on September 11, 1937, the oldest son of Ernie and Anna Cooney of Hughton. He attended Hughton school for six years before the family began moving to Saskatoon for the school year where he completed the remainder of his schooling. After graduation he completed a Diploma in Agriculture at the University of Saskatchewan.
Despite spending time in Saskatoon, the farm was where he always wanted to be! He married Carole Oliphant in November 1961 and together they farmed on the Cooney homestead until 1994. After selling the farm Clare worked for Copeland Seeds until his retirement.
As a young man Clare loved to play ball and curl. He was proud of having curled on the University team and many others over the years. He was a long-time member of the Masonic Order and Shrine and all concordant bodies. A dedicated community volunteer, Clare was a member of many service organizations and boards in Elrose, including serving on town council and a term as Mayor. After retiring he became an avid golfer, card player, and started singing in both church and community choirs.
Although a quiet man, Clare enjoyed telling his favorite stories or jokes and loved to tease, especially Carole! He found joy in spending time with family and friends and was always willing to lend a helping hand. He was proud of his all-girl team of granddaughters.
A private graveside service will be held sometime in the summer when we can gather to celebrate his life and remember his humour, kindness and gentle soul.
