Clara van der Zwan Berg was born in Scheveningen, South Holland, Netherlands on December 24, 1928. She graduated from high school and worked in various offices until her move to Sarnia, Ontario. She met her sweetheart, Fred, in World War II, and they married on April 30, 1953. Clara worked in banking and later was a Fulltime Home Engineer. She is survived by Nellie (Bill), Roy (Lori), Maaike (Rick), John (Tjitske), Harv (Doralene), and Barbara (Jeremy) and 19 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Survived by her siblings; Aas van Nieuwehuizen (the late Piet), Job van der Zwan (Krina), Jo Overduin (Freek) of the Netherlands, and Nel Bos in Waterdown, and by her in-law’s; Nell Berg, Meino (Lodewyk) Zylstra, Donna (Wilco) VanderWal, Pat Kootstra, Ina Boersma, Andy (Marg) Berg, Barb Berg and Martha Berg and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her brother Ger and in-laws Herman Berg, Marie (William) Sipkens, Wilma (John) van der Linde, Wes Kootstra, Harry Boersma and Mike Berg. Clara was a woman of strong Christian faith actively involved in her church through the Ladies’ Aid Society, Women’s Auxiliary and Hospitality. She served Disaster Relief Services and, with her late husband and four friends, began the Bibles for Missions Thrift Store. Clara was cheerful, hardworking and helpful, enjoying cooking and baking for her family and many others. A Celebration of Life Service at Living Hope Christian Reformed Church, 1281 Exmouth St, Sarnia, will be held on Monday, November 21, at 12 noon with visitation at 11 a.m. Lunch to follow the service at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sarnia Christian School or World Renew (cheques only at Smith Funeral Home, please.)
