Christopher Hillhouse
November 16, 1956 – April 30, 2022
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother Chris after many complications related to a lifelong battle with asthma.
He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years Linda; children Krislyn (Fil) and Victoria (Craig); grandchildren Edyn, Elly, Mackenzie, Camden, and Logan; brother Glen and sister Caroline (Marc).
He was predeceased by his parents Frank and Joan, younger brother Dwayne, and his beloved Nana.
Chris spent his early years growing up and making a huge network of friends in Elmwood. Throughout the years he attended King George V, Tec Voc, Elmwood High, and went on to complete studies in Industrial Electronics Technology at Red River College.
Thanks to Chris’ frugal nature he was able to save up and pay cash for his first van as a teenager, later customizing and dubbing it “Vandango”. He proudly belonged to the Golden Plains Van Club where he was introduced to his wife Linda.
Never afraid of a new challenge, Chris also built their family home in East St. Paul with the support of his family and friends. They proudly resided there for over 30 years.
Chris had a long career spanning 35+ years with MTS where he worked in various positions throughout the years, retiring as a 2nd level support in Daytec.
His passions, which were evident from a young age, included dirt bikes and pretty much anything with a motor. Later he played on the MTS baseball and volleyball teams. When his daughters started playing sports, he took on manager roles for many of their teams as well as volunteering with the community club. He wore his team manager jackets with pride, even years after his daughters stopped playing. Chris loved music – Blues and Rock – and especially enjoyed attending live performances with Linda and friends.
As he transitioned into retirement, he had the opportunity to build the shop of his dreams. He collected an impressive array of tools, partially because he would unknowingly buy duplicates when he misplaced or forgot he already owned one. He utilized his new shop to finish his brother Dobbie’s truck while also working on his dream truck – a 1949 Chevy 5-window. Even though his health prevented him from finishing the truck, his vision will be completed by his family.
Chris was a dedicated family man. He was always willing to be the family taxi or drive anywhere to run errands. He always made sure to have the grandkids favourite treats stocked for their visits. He would often send his daughters home with a case of their favourite soft drinks as well. He spent time in the shop with the grandkids, allowing them the freedom to tinker alongside him.
He cherished the many friends he made over the years from the schools he attended, MTS, and the groups and communities he was part of. He was always willing to lend a helping hand, regardless of the health challenges he faced. He was a depth of knowledge to the many people that relied on him for advice.
He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Cremation has taken place and a small private family service will be held. A celebration of life for all who knew and loved Chris will take place at a later date. The family would like to thank all the many doctors, nurses, and healthcare professionals who were a part of his treatment over the years.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Manitoba Lung Association in his honor.
