Obituary
Christine MacLeod, 88
Ross Ferry
It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved mother, Christine (Tena) May (Caldwell) MacLeod, age 88, on December 6, 2022 at her home in Ross Ferry.
Born in Cranberry, Sydney Mines in 1934, Mum was the daughter of the late James and Christine (Grainger) Caldwell. She met the love of her life, Angus MacLeod from Ross Ferry, at a dance at the Birches in Millville. They married in 1954 and spent 59 years of love and devotion together before Angus’ passing in 2013.
Mum is survived, and will be greatly missed by her three children: daughter Mary (John) Hart, East Mountain, NS, son John (Tanya Grant) MacLeod, Ross Ferry, daughter Susan (Derek) Purchase, St. John’s, NL, and daughter-in-law Mary-Rose MacLeod (Keylor). Mum was a loving grandmother to seven grandchildren: James Hart (Celeste Gould), Diana (Craig) Matthews, Erin Beth MacLeod (Roddie O’Handley), Mark MacLeod, Laura Purchase (John Samms), Nicole Purchase (Josh Allen) and Katherine Purchase. Mum took great joy and pride in her six great-grandchildren: Kali MacLeod, Christopher Hart, Silas Matthews, Jonah Matthews, Korbyn MacLeod and Mariah Samms. Mum is also survived by her dear sister, Rebecca (Paul) Penney and her brother-in-law Carman MacLeod. She is also survived by numerous Caldwell nieces and nephews who have fond memories of their visits to the farm in Ross Ferry.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her brothers Andrew Caldwell and James Caldwell; sisters, Athelia Billard, Catherine Chandler, Georgine Caldwell, Marguerite MacLeod and Marsha Caldwell; brothers-in-law Fred Billard and Bob Chandler, and sister-in-law Ethel Caldwell.
Before her marriage, Mum worked at the Co-op bakery where she learned more about baking delicious bread, rolls and sweets. Her faith and the Presbyterian Church were the cornerstones of her life. She was blessed with a beautiful singing voice and enjoyed singing in the choir at St Andrews in Sydney Mines in her youth and in Knox Church, Ross Ferry in her adult life. Mum was actively involved in mission work through the years as a member of and often on the executive of the Knox AMS group. After meeting at a dance, one of Mum and Dad’s favourite pastimes, especially after Dad retired, was square dancing. They made many friends and did a lot of travelling to square dancing events all over Atlantic Canada and even to Ontario.
Over the last several years in her battle with dementia, Mum has received care and support from an amazing group of people. Her son John has been her rock through all of this, giving her tender care, love and a teasing word to lift her spirits.
We would like to thank Dr Paul Hickey, Dr Amy Wambolt, Dr Peter Poulos, Dr Jeanne Ferguson, Dr George Burns, Dr John Ritter, Julia Penney, all the nurses from VON, home care support from Rhonda, Molly, Trish, Sarah, Kim, Stephanie and Linda and home care coordinators Ann and Sharon. We want to give special thanks to Isabel Hawley and Ruth Sibley for the many hours of loving care they gave Mum. Our thanks to neighbours and friends who have given support, cards, food and hugs though this difficult time.
A visitation and funeral service will be held at a later date which will be announced. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. Memorial donations may be made to Knox Presbyterian Church, Ross Ferry, St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, Sydney Mines or the charity of one’s choice. Online condolences may be sent to the family by visiting the tribute wall of the obituary at www.wjdooley.com.
